What is the essential difference between layer 2 switches and Layer 3 switches? Can static routes be configured on Layer 2 switches?

Layer 2 switch is a traditional switch. Based on mac address, the mapping from mac to port (cam table, similar to {00-13-20-b1-3a-97port2}) is established.

General layer 2 switches has no three-layer function, that is, it cannot configure static routes.

Layer 3 switching is to establish the mapping from ip to port (fib table, similar to {192.168.1.0/24 port1}).

Layer 3 switching is based on routing, and fib is generated from the routing table, but Layer 3 switching is faster than routing.
