Zhang Qiang: The Lake in the Surgeon's Eyes

In the winter of 20 18, Dr. Zhang Qiang was invited to share a lesson with you by the lake-"How to Manage Doctors with Surgical Thinking". Why are surgeons invited to the lake for classes? What are the similarities between doctors and entrepreneurs? What does a lake look like to a surgeon?

Recently, we paid a return visit to Dr. Zhang Qiang and talked with him about his experience of teaching by the lake. ...

Inviting doctors, military scientists, writers and drama directors to give lectures at the lake is enough to prove that it has no boundaries and dares to break the rules.

Zhang Jiangdao:

Famous vascular surgery expert, founder of Dr. Zhang Qiang Group, lakeside cross-border division.

20 18 1 1 month, I took a cross-border class at the lakeside as a surgeon, talking about the leadership embodied in a surgical operation and the application of the doctor's management concept in enterprise management.

Before that, I had only heard of the lake and never really touched it.

Generally speaking, I don't prepare lessons when I go to other places for lectures, but I spent a day preparing lessons and made a lot of preparations before I went to the lake. This lecture experience is very special for me, because I mostly talked about the macro level, industry format and business model of the medical and health industry in other places, and I have never talked about the leadership of doctors and managers at the lakeside before.

I remember very clearly that at that time, the classroom scene by the lake was specially decorated like a hospital, with some signs of operating room and consulting room. I also give lectures in a white coat, and many details are done in place, which I have never felt anywhere else.

To tell the truth, before I came to give a lecture, I had many questions: First, why did a doctor come to the lake to give a lecture? Second, according to the enrollment conditions of the lakeside, I may not even be qualified as a student. Why did you invite me to give a lecture?

Later, the course producer who docked with me said that Lakeside hoped to introduce some cross-border teachers to talk about cross-border content. Not only I, but also people from different fields, such as military scientists, historians, writers and drama directors, were invited to give lectures at the lake.

In other words, if I am just the boss of a company, I can't come to the lake for classes with my ability and experience, but I have the qualification of doctor. This at least proves that the lake has no boundaries and dares to break the rules and try different things.

I am an entrepreneur myself, and sometimes I think, what does the CEO want to learn? After thinking about it, I think the most important thing is how to know yourself better, how much potential you have and where the ceiling is. In my opinion, this is the greatest significance of cross-border courses, which expands the cognitive boundary of entrepreneurs and makes them dare to explore their own unknowns.

Comic book "The Balance"

Similarities between doctors and entrepreneurs: both need the ability of strategic choice.

The most precious wealth of the lakeside is a group of outstanding students, who are first-line entrepreneurs from all walks of life, and they are all 1 positions of enterprises, which is very important. I have also taken classes in other business schools. In many places, there are more professional managers such as vice presidents or senior managers. Some school professional managers are mixed with enterprises 1.

In fact, the thinking modes of these two types of people are very different. The person who really decides the company's life and death is 1, and the knowledge they need is * * * *, but the core and most valuable thing for an enterprise must be right and wrong, absolutely differentiated or even unique.

In the whole classroom communication, what impressed me the most was that the students all had a strong thirst for knowledge and a strong curiosity about the unknown. Because I am a surgeon, the students asked many medical questions, such as how the surgeon leads the team, and some personal questions, such as why I chose to leave the comfortable environment in the system to start a business.

In fact, entrepreneurship itself is a process of constantly knowing yourself, but that kind of understanding comes from business scenes, which is different from studying by the lake. Lakeside provides a scene outside business or work, so that entrepreneurs can share and communicate with a group of peers, which is an effective learning.

I have always felt that there are two ways of education: one is to invite people like me from outside; Another is to train students to be teachers. The former way is the most traditional way of education operation, and any school can recruit top teachers as long as it wants to find them; In contrast, the latter way of education may be better.

Because every student at the lakeside is a practitioner, the problems encountered in starting a business are real, and they are in different industries and fields, with rich perspectives, which can provide differentiated observations and see the laws of sex. Therefore, from the perspective of an entrepreneur or a learner, the collision and communication between students is the most valuable and attractive.

It is easy for people to form thinking inertia. There is a motto on my desk-"Get out of the quagmire of habits", which reminds me at all times, but being an enterprise requires entrepreneurs to change this inertia at all times, because enterprises require entrepreneurs to have different thinking modes at different stages of development.

In my opinion, there is only one thing that can change the thinking inertia of entrepreneurs, and that is failure.

Only when people hit a wall can they really wake up and start to change. Sometimes a little setback or mistake is not enough to make people reflect. You know, some entrepreneurs have certain ideas when choosing to start a business, and it is not difficult to change if they take the lead.

This is also the end of the class by the lake. What impresses me most is that it advocates failure sharing, which is not the teaching philosophy of other business schools in China. Of course, the word failure is a bit heavy, and the more accurate statement should be pit, setback or detour.

For CEO, learning failure is very important. A group of CEOs from all walks of life are concentrated on the lakeside. The failures and setbacks they encounter in the process of starting a business are different from those in books, because they all stem from the real problems encountered in real practice, and other entrepreneurs can feel the same and learn from them.

But what we can see now are all kinds of successful entrepreneurial stories. Business schools are keen to replicate success, but behind these successes are countless failures. Some people may fall down after a failure, others may cross a hurdle, and the lessons learned from failure are the greatest wealth, because many people will or may step on the same "pit" in the future.

Take Ali as an example, some wrong decisions or failures in the whole development process are reasonable in the present dimension, and some are inevitable, such as the problem of selecting and employing people. These failures will be experienced by many startups. If we can see this, some things may be avoided.

More importantly, entrepreneurs should find the thinking logic behind failure. The same thing, others succeeded, but you failed. Why? Just like Taobao mode, there are so many entrepreneurs in China, why don't most of them grow up?

Through the failed study, we should find out the reasons behind it and make it clear. Only in this way can we find the essence of * * * from personality cultivation and turn it into something that everyone can absorb by himself. This is also the source of confusion for many entrepreneurs.

I have always believed that education is a double-edged sword, which can help a group of people and hurt a group of people. Because the knowledge of education is sorted out by teachers, it may not be suitable for scholars' enterprise development stage. If the teaching content can match the needs of scholars, it will naturally help them; If it doesn't work, it may harm them, and take the things that were not suitable back to the enterprise to try. The advantage of the lake is that all the students are here. Enterprise's 1, so the matching degree between content and demand is higher.

A good education is not to teach knowledge, but to teach thinking patterns. No matter Lakeside or other business schools, the knowledge taught is not necessarily correct, because knowledge has applicable objects and time boundaries, business theory is useful now, and it may be completely useless in the next decade, but the thinking mode is different.

If Lakeside teaches CEOs how to distinguish knowledge, how to choose the knowledge that is most useful to them and which knowledge can be rejected, it may be more important than teaching knowledge. In the final analysis, the thinking mode of a CEO is the biggest variable that determines the life and death of an enterprise. Both the business model and the development direction of an enterprise are determined by the number 1.

The most impressive lesson is the operation I performed on the eight-year graduate students of Zhejiang Medical University. There are always three classes. The first lesson is about the basic knowledge of surgery, and the second lesson teaches you how to wash your hands, because you should wash your hands before surgery. This knowledge is clearly described in textbooks, so I will talk about conventional classroom teaching according to book knowledge.

In the third class, I asked the students what they had learned in the first two classes. All the students answered and learned the steps of washing their hands. Only one classmate asked: this hand washing method takes 15 minutes, will it delay the patient's operation time? He went on to say, is there a better way to shorten the time for washing hands to three minutes?

Most students just accept knowledge, and only this student is thinking about whether what is taught in class is wrong or not, and whether there is a better alternative. In fact, it was already three minutes to wash your hands abroad. Imagine that if a student had asked such a question decades ago, the 3-minute washing technology might have been invented in China.

What I want to express is that if a school only teaches knowledge, it will be too basic. The key is to cultivate their way of thinking and make them become socially responsible entrepreneurs. In my opinion, the lakeside should cultivate some people with independent thinking and independent values.

The simplest example is what success is. When this society generally thinks that the success of entrepreneurs means that the enterprises are large in scale and earn a lot of money, can the lakeside convey a kind of values and redefine success? Success does not depend on the scale of the enterprise, but on the social value it brings.

A good school can't cater to and obey a certain trend, but should guide and change the society and pass on the values it adheres to. There is no doubt that the lakeside is special, which distinguishes it from other business schools. Cross-border is a good example, but only cross-border is not enough. Being a business school in a business school has a bigger boundary.
