The more populous ethnic minority on Hainan Island is the Li.

Hainan is a multi-ethnic province with 53 ethnic minorities in addition to the Han Chinese. Among the 53 ethnic minorities, the Li have the largest population, followed by the Miao, Zhuang and Hui. The largest ethnic minority living on Hainan Island is the Li.

The Han, Li and Miao are the hereditary ethnic groups in Hainan Province, while the rest are cadres, workers and immigrants who moved in after liberation and are scattered throughout the province. The Li are the earliest inhabitants of Hainan Island. Most of the Li and Miao live in the central and southern counties of Qiongzhong, Baoting, Baisha, Lingshui and Changjiang, and in Sanya and Wuzhishan; the Han Chinese population is mainly concentrated in the northeast, north and coastal areas.

Characteristics of Li Clothing

The traditional clothing of the Li people is rich in cultural connotations, and the differences between the various dialect areas are relatively obvious (especially women's clothing), which used to be an important symbol to distinguish between different blood groups and tribal groups in history.

In traditional dress, Li women often wear straight-necked, collarless, button-less tops, or in some cases, a tunic, with a tube skirt of varying lengths, hair tied behind the head with bone or silver hairpins, embroidered headscarves, and earrings, collars, and bracelets.

Men's traditional attire is generally knotted hair in front of the forehead or behind the head, the blouse is collarless, open to the chest, under the waist cloth (hanging for leisure at home), part of the Mobilai men's tops and women's not much difference. In Ha, Qi, Mei Foo, Run Li a few surviving elderly women have maintained the traditional practice of tattooing.
