Knowledge and Customs about Xiao Han

Small Cold is one of the twenty-four solar terms, and the customs about Small Cold vary from place to place.

Small Cold, the 23rd of the 24 solar terms, is the 5th solar term of winter. Cold air accumulates for a long time and becomes cold, and Small Cold means the weather is cold, but not yet to the extreme point. It is the same as Great Cold, Small Summer, Great Heat and the first summer, which are all the solar terms indicating the change of coldness and warmth of the air temperature. The Little Cold festival is characterized by cold, but not yet cold enough to be extreme.

For example, in Guangdong, on the day of Xiaohan, all Guangdong families have the habit of eating glutinous rice, because glutinous rice not only has a unique taste, but also has the effect of nourishing the middle and benefiting the qi, resisting the cold, and it is the most suitable to eat glutinous rice in the cold season.
