How can I match white with pigment?

White paint doesn't match. White is a mixture of all colors and can only be extracted or selected. Pigment printing and dyeing are a mixture of additives. Several colors are mixed together to become another color, which can only get darker and darker, and finally become black.

A variety of colors can be achieved by matching different colors. But this does not include white. White pigment can't be mixed with any pigment. The commonly used lithopone pigment is made of barium sulfate, barite, zinc sulfate and other substances. Among them, barite is particularly important, and the production of white pigments requires barite raw materials with good purity and good texture.

The main function of white pigment is to enhance the brightness of color and reduce the purity of color. White does not absorb light, but it can reflect it. Therefore, if we can skillfully use white pigments in the painting, we can make the whole picture have a luminous feeling.

Classification of white pigments

White pigments are mainly divided into lead white, zinc white and titanium white.

Lead white is the most commonly used white pigment in European traditional oil painting colors, which is very stable but toxic;

Zinc white is non-toxic, but it eats more oil and has poor coverage. It dries slowly, is brittle and cracks easily.

Titanium dioxide has strong hiding power and fast drying, and it is easy to turn yellow after drying. It is often futile to use it with zinc. Zinc titanium dioxide not only reduces the brittleness of zinc oxide, but also improves the shortcomings of titanium dioxide used alone. It is the most used white pigment at present.
