The first defense speech of the debate

Gong asked about politics. Zi said: enough food, enough soldiers, the people believe in it. Zi Gong said: must not go, in the three first? Zi Gong said: must go, in the three first? Zigong said: must go, in the two of the first? Said: go to the food, since the ancient times have died, the people do not have faith is not established.

This is the political philosophy of Confucius, but also the ideal of Confucian political ethics.

Zigong asked about politics, about the leadership of the government, and there are three concepts of Confucius: "enough food", including economic, political, and social stability, everyone has food to eat, clothes to wear, life is good, and the people are food for heaven. Secondly, "sufficient troops" means that the country should have a strong army and a strong national defense to defend the sovereignty of the country. Thirdly, "people's trust" means the people's trust in the government. These three principles encompass a wide range of issues. Zigong said: If the environmental conditions change to such an extent that there is no way to do everything, which of the three things should be removed first if we want to do two less? Confucius said: The military first, because when there is no war, the army can be set up without or with less. Zigong said: In case of further changes, which item should be removed again among the sufficient food and the establishment of trust? Confucius said: remove food, sacrifice economic construction, everyone poorer, or even no food can be, but there is only one major political principle "faith" must be maintained. The people's trust in the government and the people's confidence is firm, and only then can great cohesion be generated. It is only then that economic construction can be resumed, that there can be food to eat, that the national defense can be rebuilt and that the army can be strengthened.
