"The Little River Runs Through Water" is a beautiful and lyrical mountain song from Maidu, Yunnan Province. The lyrics, in a poetic manner, bring people to a moving scene of a bright moon, a gentle breeze, and a gurgling brook, and vividly express A-mei's deep love for A-go. The song is simple and natural, with a gentle melody and a beautiful mood, expressing the purest and most sincere human nature and people's longing for a better life.

Background of Creation

The creation of the song is controversial. One says, "The River Runs Through It" is the work of Yin Yigong, a member of Yunnan University's Nanfeng Chorus, who organized and adapted two Yunnan folk songs, "Sheepherding Tune" and "The Moon Comes Out Bright and Wide", and was inspired by a song he heard Hua Mingbang, a member of the Nanfeng Chorus, humming on a moonlit night, and sang it again and again, modifying it and composing the song. After writing the song, Jiang Ruasi, the founder of Yunnan University's South Wind Chorus, named it "Water Runs Down the Little River".

Another theory is that "Water Runs Down the Little River" is not a folk song collected and organized by Yin Yigong, but a song composed by Gao Liang, who wrote the tune "Rice Planting in Big Fields," with lyrics by Mao Ziliang, and that Gao Liang's student, Huamingbang, joined Yunnan University's Nanfeng Chorus in 1947, and that by chance, chorus member Yin Yigong heard Huamingbang sing the song and recorded it. By chance, Yin Yigong, a member of the choir, heard Hua Mingbang sing the song and recorded it. Afterwards, Jiang Ruashu, the founder of the choir, named the song "Water Runs Down the Little River".
