The Legend of the Origin of the Olympic Games
In the summer solstice of 776 B.C.E., in front of the Temple of Hera under the Holy Mountain of Olympus, the solemn priest lit the sacred fire on the altar, and a group of sturdy men who waited at a distance saw the light of the fire, and ran towards the sacred fire on the altar, and the first group of warriors to arrive was designated as the messengers to carry the sacred fire.
It was a sacred duty. From Olympia, they would carry the oracle to the city-states, which received it and immediately disarmed and stopped fighting, sending men to the Olympic Games, which were held on the day of the full moon. Since then, the Olympic Games have been a symbol of peace and friendship. But there are various legends about the origin of the ancient Olympic Games.
In fact, the origin of the Olympic Games is surprisingly three different versions of mythological stories, all three stories are related to one person, who is the most famous god in Greek history - Zeus, who controls the sky and the earth. This god has the greatest power, he is like our Jade Emperor, too famous, dominated the West for many years. The Olympics, then, start with Zeus's dad.
Zeus's dad was very interesting, when he was young, he listened to a fortune teller, this fortune teller told him that the children you will have in the future will kill you. So he went on to have five children, all of whom he swallowed inside his stomach.
After the sixth child, Zeus, was born, Zeus's mother was very nervous because she was afraid that Zeus would be eaten by his father again, so she hid Zeus in a cave, where two very beautiful nymphs took care of him.
When Zeus grew up, he fought against his father with the help of his grandmother. Zeus fought against not only his father, but also a group of fairies who represented his father's interest group. This group of gods and goddesses, along with Zeus's dad, fought against Zeus.
Then Zeus forced his dad to spit out his five brothers and sisters together, and then built a castle with his brothers and sisters in this part of the Olympics, and fought against the group of fairies that his dad represented. This war was fought for four years, and Zeus and the others were finally victorious, so the Olympic Games were held every four years from then on.
The second story involves Zeus' illegitimate son, who was called Heracles. He was born to Zeus and the beautiful goddess Alcmene. This son was very powerful, he was a Hercules, so he basically spent his life fighting heaven and earth and people and demons, and was busy fighting every day.
His story is very legendary, when Zeus's original wife Hera knew that he had an illegitimate child, the heart is very unhappy, so Hercules is in Hera's jealousy and revenge grew up, in order to not let Hercules continue to be hurt by Hera, Alcmene asked Hercules to complete 12 other people can not do a great thing, used to sharpen the son's will, and to grow his insights.
One day, when Heracles was passing through the city-state of Elis, he saw the king's list that said whoever could clean a bullring with 3,000 cows in one day would be rewarded with 300 cows. Hercules said, "I can!" The king, of course, didn't believe this far-flung brat, and the two men made a bet.
In order to prevent the king from reneging on his promise, Hercules found witnesses and wrote a contract stating that if he cleaned the bull ring, the king would keep his promise and give him 300 cows. The clever Hercules removed the partition of the barn, dug a ditch next to the barn, drew river water, and washed the barn clean.
Afterward, he reinstalled the partition, and the cowshed looked brand new. But the king reneged, and instead of honoring his promise, he insisted that he had never said he would give so much. This offended Hercules, who in a fit of rage drove the king away, and the people, who had long been oppressed by the king, applauded him. This happens to be the 12th great thing that Heracles did that no one else could accomplish.
From this point on, Hercules wanted to run the Olympics, why? Because he had a great relationship with the gods, and he wanted to show his divine power through the Olympics. This guy was a decathlete, did everything like everything else, and after he ran this Olympics, he won almost every event.
The first Olympics were said to be run by him, and there was only one event - the race. So how long was the race course?192.27 meters, which is said to be 600 times the length of his feet, with 600 times the length of his feet as the length of the race. That's the second story.
The third story is even more interesting, involving Zeus's grandson, Periplus, whose fate was a little bit more difficult. His dad was sent to hell for dishonoring the gods, so he suffered along with him, and was driven out of Troy. The guy lived in the wilderness, but while he was down and out, he couldn't get enough of women.
Legend has it that Peropes fell in love with Hippodamia, the only daughter of the king of the ancient Greek city-state of Pisa. Because this princess was so beautiful, there were so many marriage proposals that the gates of the city of Pisa were almost bursting at the seams. But a fortune-teller warned the king, "You must not let your daughter get married, for according to my speculation, your future son-in-law will surely kill you!"
This upset the king, so he came up with a way to keep his daughter from getting married without the countless suitors complaining: he asked the suitors to have a driving contest with himself. If the suitors won, they could marry the princess; if they lost, they had to be stabbed to death. As a result, 13 suitors perished under the king's spear in one ****.
Peropes was the 14th suitor, who also happened to be the princess's sweetheart. Inspired and energized by the power of love, Peropes accepts the king's challenge. But the king's car was the best, and with his own carriage, it was difficult for Peropes to win the race. So he went looking for help, and who did he find, he found Poseidon.
For Poseidon had a very famous chariot of fire. He thought it was great, so he borrowed the chariot of fire from Poseidon, and pulled it by four horses, and ran it as fast as he could. The boy then got into the chariot of fire and tried to run to the finish line too.
Just without realizing it, when his father-in-law-to-be caught up with him in his fast chariot drawn by two horses, and with his spear was about to stab him in the undershirt, Poseidon came out and removed the screws from the king's wheels. So the moment the king stabbed Peropus, the wheel fell off and the king was dropped dead.
After the fall the foolish boy looked back and saw that his father-in-law's palace had just been struck by lightning, and the fire was blazing, burning down to a single pillar, so he was terrified, and went back quickly to save his wife-to-be, and in the end a beautiful marriage was made, and he became the new king of the city-state of Pisa.
A few days later, to celebrate the victory and the wedding, Peropes held a great athletic event at Olympia, in which he arranged for chariot and jousting competitions. This, it is said, was the beginning of the Olympic movement.
What these men in the three myths above were trying to say with all this display was to show muscular strength and beauty. Just take a look at all the statues in ancient Greece, which are basically nude. We are very uncomfortable when we first look at it because our Chinese culture that is never nude.
You see, when they were fighting, they didn't even wear pants, they were really naked. The Greek women, such as Venus with a broken arm, are very beautiful, but they are also nude. Then think about our Chinese beauty, when you see Wang Zhaojun nude, or Diaochan nude, no right.
But look at all the Greek goddesses, all the men, basically naked. You know why? The reason why when they fought wars, the main characters in the myths were naked ti kill people, naked ti compete, it was to show the strength of the muscles and the beauty of the muscles.
So the basic spirit of the Olympics is the combination of strength and beauty. It can be seen by these mythological stories that the Greeks were very fond of struggle and competition. For example, in the third story, there is also a race in a carriage with his father-in-law and a struggle with his father. What does this mean? This is a race in nature.
Then the nature of this competition developed to the point that in 776 AD, the beginning of the Greek epoch, there was the Games. And the main theme of this games speaks clearly of the combination of strength and beauty.
So by the time of the 14th Ancient Olympics, the athletes who came out were basically naked. This kind of thing would be unthinkable and incomprehensible in our Chinese culture, but Greek culture emphasized raw muscular strength and beauty.
The first of the three myths, the first story, when Zeus dealt with his father, it was a group of people led by Zeus against a group of gods led by his father, and both sides were equally outnumbered, the same as in basketball and volleyball.
The third story, Zeus's grandson and his father-in-law, are also one-on-one. So this symmetrical athleticism is the essence of Greek culture - fairness - and what this symmetry expresses is force and beauty. When he would fight, in addition to being able to display a strong force basket, the movements were extremely beautiful, hence the reason why they could be made into statues, but all athleticism must have fairness as a spiritual connotation.
