How is styrene-acrylic emulsion synthesized?

Styrene-acrylic emulsion is a widely used chemical product, mainly used as architectural coatings, so what is the significance of styrene-acrylic emulsion? What are the classifications of styrene-acrylic emulsion? How is styrene-acrylic emulsion synthesized? Is styrene-acrylic emulsion toxic?

Styrene-acrylic emulsion (styrene-acrylate emulsion) is obtained by emulsion polymerization of styrene and acrylate monomer. Styrene-acrylic emulsion is a widely studied system in emulsion polymerization, and it is also one of the top ten non-crosslinked emulsions with important industrial application value in the world today. Styrene-acrylic emulsion, as an important chemical intermediate product, has a very wide range of uses. Now it is mainly used as building coating, metal surface latex paint, floor coating, paper adhesive, adhesive and so on. Styrene-acrylic emulsion has good adhesion, transparent film formation, good water resistance, oil resistance, heat resistance and aging resistance. Styrene-acrylic emulsion is used as paper adhesive, and can also be used in combination with starch, polyvinyl alcohol, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and other adhesives.

Classification of styrene-acrylic emulsion:

According to different processes and functions, styrene-acrylic emulsion can be divided into the following categories:

(1) silicone modified styrene-acrylic emulsion

(2) organofluorine modified styrene-acrylic emulsion

(3) epoxy resin modified styrene-acrylic emulsion

(4) functional monomer modified styrene-acrylic emulsion

(5) cationic styrene-acrylic emulsion

Synthesis of styrene-acrylic emulsion

In the traditional synthesis of styrene-acrylic emulsion, persulfate is generally used as initiator, and its dosage is about 0.6% of monomer, and the conversion rate can reach about 95%. With the increase of initiator dosage, the monomer conversion rate increases, but at the same time, the coagulation rate of emulsion decreases, the viscosity of emulsion increases, the particle size of emulsion increases, and the reaction stability becomes worse. By adding a small amount of redox initiator in the later stage of the reaction, the amount of persulfate was reduced and the conversion rate was greatly improved.

The preparation of high elastic styrene-acrylic emulsion by using persulfate alone has the advantages of strong smell, large monomer residue and low conversion rate. In order to obtain styrene-acrylic emulsion with small particle size and high conversion rate, a small amount of redox initiator was added in the later stage of the reaction, which greatly reduced the activation energy of generating free radicals and improved the reaction rate. When the amount of persulfate is 0.3% of the monomer and the amount of redox initiator is 0.2% of the monomer, the emulsion is fine and the conversion rate can reach over 98%.

Is styrene-acrylic emulsion toxic?

Styrene-acrylic emulsion is toxic and its content is very low. After all, nothing is without poison.

Styrene-acrylic emulsion is a new type of environmental protection coating base. Styrene-acrylic emulsion is styrene-acrylic polymer emulsion. The word * * * polymer means that molecules are very large, nonvolatile and will not be inhaled into your body. Even if you eat it, it won't be absorbed.

Coatings are all polymers, which are polymerized from monomers. There will inevitably be monomer residues in the production process. In addition, there are other small molecular additives, which are basically toxic. Those with poly characters are basically considered non-toxic; It may be toxic after degradation, but it is basically not considered to be degraded. Therefore, the toxicity of coatings mainly comes from residual monomers, solvents, decomposition over time and additives.

The above is my description of the meaning and classification of styrene-acrylic emulsion, the synthesis of styrene-acrylic emulsion and whether styrene-acrylic emulsion is toxic or not. I hope it helps you.
