Why were ancient men allowed to have three wives and four concubines?
This is determined by the ancient marriage system.
We know that human beings in ancient times were herd animals, and there was no restriction on marriage at all, and sexual relations were also relatively chaotic. But as humans evolved, they began to slowly develop a sense of morality, and at this time marriage and sexual relations began to be incorporated into the realm of ritual.
The Western Zhou Dynasty's Rites of Passage stipulates that a man must complete the process of marrying his wife through six ceremonies: "the ceremony of the bride, the questioning of the name of the bride, the ceremony of the bride's auspiciousness, the ceremony of the marriage of the bride's signatures, the invitation to a date, and the ceremony of the bride's welcome".
During the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period, the nobility began to practice a system of marriage called the "concubine system.
What was this system? When a vassal marries a wife, the bride's family will marry the bride's sister in a dowry, and the other vassals will also send a daughter as a dowry, these dowries are called "bridesidesides", so there was also the saying "the vassals hired nine women".
After the Qin Dynasty, the concubine was slowly replaced by the concubine, but no matter whether it was a concubine or a concubine, its status could not be compared with that of the main wife, and the concubine could be bought, sold, given, exchanged, or rewarded like an object. In order to marry a concubine, the wife had to go through the "six rites" of marriage, while the concubine only had to be accepted into the bedroom.
In addition, the feudalism of "no filial piety" is also the theoretical basis for men to have three wives and four concubines.
Then later, the rich merchants, officials and scholars of the "concubine system" to carry forward, that is, maidservants, house prostitutes and so on. Therefore, the ancient man's "three wives and four concubines" is not really a quantitative word, but an adjective, describing that men can have many wives and concubines.
At the same time, this "three wives and four concubines" is also a tumor in Confucianism, which we should resolutely abandon, and resolutely disallow "second wife", "concubine", "honey", "concubine", "concubine", "concubine", "concubine", "concubine", "concubine", "concubine", "concubine", "concubine", "concubine", "concubine" and "concubine". We should not allow the proliferation of "second wives," "mistresses," and "honeys" in our society.
Feudal marriage customs are trampled on women, they regard women as playthings, the concubine as a tool for lust, even concubines of Bai Juyi also wrote a poem said: "life is not a woman body, a hundred years of bitterness and happiness by others." In such a large environment, I do not know how many human tragedies have been derived.
