Expanded Information

In the 1960s, it was a prolific era for electronic music. was a prolific era for electronic music - not just in academia, but for independent artists as well - and that's because synthesizer technology became much easier to work with. During this period, a strong community of composers and musicians built and thrived, working to create new sounds and new instruments.

1960 saw the premiere of Lunin's Gargoyles for violin and tape, and Stockhausen's Contact for electronic sound, piano and percussion. Two versions of the work exist - one on a Channel 4 tape; the other on a tape of a crowd performance.

"In 'Contact,' Stockhausen abandons the traditional musical formula based on linear development and dramatic climax. He calls this new approach the 'moment form,' similar to the movie editing techniques developed in the early 20th century."

The first such synthesizer was the Buccila, which appeared in 1963 as a pioneering product of concrete music composer Morton Supernick. The Tremen had been used since the 1920s, but its heightened popularity began when it was used in the 1950s for soundtrack music for science fiction movies (such as Bernard Herrmann's score for the classic The Day the Earth Stood Still).
