History of the Institute of Calligraphy and Art at Peking University

The calligraphy art tradition of Peking University is profound, which can be said to have its origins in a number of famous artists. Peking University has a century-long, brilliant history of calligraphy practice and theory building. Calligraphy art education at Peking University will inherit the tradition of art education at Peking University, which has a distinctive humanistic color, emphasizes the academic and cultural nature of calligraphy art, and shows the characteristics of its quality education and professional education. Peking University's tradition of "inclusiveness", "freedom of thought" and "academic independence" and the patriotic and dedicated spirit of "taking the world as one's own" will be the basis for the development of calligraphy education in Peking University. Patriotism and dedication, "cultural calligraphy" as the purpose of running the school, will greatly promote the calligraphy art education and research at Peking University, for the development of Chinese calligraphy art to do its due contribution.

On November 8, 2003, the Institute of Calligraphy and Art of Peking University was established, which succeeded the idea of calligraphy culture put forward by Mr. Cai Yuanpei, the old president of Peking University during the May Fourth period. Over the past six years, the Institute of Calligraphy at Peking University, relying on Peking University's deep historical deposits and abundant cultural resources, has been committed to expanding the theoretical connotation of "cultural calligraphy", continuously practicing calligraphy culture, focusing on the cross-cultural and international perspectives of oriental discourse, and advocating the development of "approaching the classics", "entering into the classics", "entering into the culture", "learning to write", and "learning to write". In the process of "Approaching the Classics" and "Entering the Wei and Jin Dynasties", it insists on "keeping the right and innovating" to recreate the classics of calligraphy.

The Institute of Calligraphy and Art of Peking University promotes the participation of Oriental Calligraphy culture in the contemporary cultural process from the perspectives of Cultural Calligraphy, University Calligraphy, and International Calligraphy, emphasizing the cultural, ecological, and spiritual nature of Calligraphy, and committing itself to the harmony and perfection of the spiritual life of mankind. The advancement of Oriental Calligraphy culture will not only further enhance the image and inner spirit of Oriental culture, but at the same time take on a worldwide significance with its unique spiritual and cultural connotations in the face of Western culture.

Over the past six years, all the teachers and students of the Institute of Calligraphy and Art at Peking University have pioneered a brand-new path through hard work. Through the enrollment of two sessions of calligraphy graduate students about 130 people, run the "Peking University Calligraphy", published academic works "Peking University Calligraphy Institute" cultural calligraphy "research and teaching series" 7, published "Peking University Academic Calligraphy Postgraduate Calligraphy Collection of Excellence," 20, held an international calligraphy conference and international calligraphy exhibition held nearly eight times.

The Institute of Calligraphy of Peking University has so far enrolled two postgraduate classes of calligraphy at Peking University. More than 100 pieces of calligraphy works are on display, all carefully selected from the works of the students of the second postgraduate course of calligraphy, some of which have been exhibited at home and abroad for many times, representing the new achievements of Peking University in the exploration of the field of calligraphy art; also on display are important works of the former party and state leaders, Comrade Li Lanqing, Mr. Shen Peng, Mr. Zhang Hai, and other famous calligraphers, etc. inscribed to the Institute of Calligraphy of Peking University. The works of this exhibition are all included in the "Peking University Second Postgraduate Course on Calligraphy Collection", and in April 2009 by the China Federation of Literature and Art Publishing House officially published.

Cultivation Program for Master's Degree Students (Calligraphy Direction) of the Institute of Calligraphy of Peking University Love the motherland, abide by the law and discipline, have a rigorous academic style and good conduct, have a strong sense of enterprise and dedication, and actively serve the cause of socialist construction. They have good overall quality and strong creative ability, systematically master the basic theories of fine arts and related disciplines, and have the specialized theoretical knowledge, basic skills and methods of this professional direction, know how to use computers, have mastered at least one foreign language, and are able to use the basic theories and specialized knowledge they have acquired to engage in scientific research and solve problems in practical work.

Cultural Studies of Chinese Calligraphy.

Mainly through the discussion of the relationship between Chinese calligraphy and culture and the cultural charm of Chinese calligraphy, we will figure out the basic origin and content of Chinese calligraphy art, the aesthetic spirit and aesthetic charm of calligraphy culture, as well as the cultural output of Chinese calligraphy in globalization. Chinese Calligraphy Culture focuses on the cultural context of the new century, in which Chinese calligraphy and Western art are in a dialogue of "difference" and "plurality", so as to achieve pluralism and complementarity, harmony and difference, and to minimize the impact of the "interpretation of cultural China" in the "interpretation of cultural China". The traditional Chinese calligraphic theories are rich in information but also complicated. This course is intended to analyze the best of them, starting from the Han Dynasty and ending in the late Qing Dynasty, and categorized into six chapters and several sections.
