Main characteristics of three schools of mahogany furniture

China traditional furniture has a long history. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the development of feudal social system in China reached its peak, politics, economy and culture all entered unprecedented prosperity, and furniture manufacturing also entered its heyday.

After hundreds of years' development, the furniture in Ming and Qing Dynasties has been perfected day by day, forming the peak in the history of furniture in China. Among them, there are three most influential schools representing the highest level of traditional furniture in China, namely Su Zuo from the poetic Jiangnan, Guang Zuo from Lingnan and Jing Zuo from the royal court.

Su Zuo furniture refers to the furniture produced in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River around Su Xichang and Shanghai. Su-style furniture has a long history, and Ming-style furniture, which is famous at home and abroad, is basically based on Su. Su Zuo's furniture mostly adopts small-area relief, line carving, wood inlay and stone inlay, and the themes are mostly auspicious patterns such as landscapes, flowers and birds, pines, bamboos and plums, with exquisite craftsmanship and coordinated composition. The carved big bed, master chair and round table are beautifully depicted, and the small ornaments are vivid and exquisite, which makes people fondle them.

Dongyang woodcarving, on the other hand, adopts this typical creative technique and technological characteristics. Perhaps it is such a coincidence that Dongyang people are increasingly engaged in the production of mahogany furniture and the production of classical high-end furniture. The Soviet Union had a far-reaching influence on Ming-style furniture and later craftsmen. Many Ming-style Huang Huali classical furniture were made by Soviet craftsmen. Their outstanding wisdom and extraordinary craftsmanship still affect the field of furniture design and production.

Jingzuo refers to the furniture made by Beijing court workshops, mainly hardwood furniture such as mahogany, Huang Huali and mahogany. Pay attention to majesty, luxury, elegance, solemnity and orthodoxy, and show the "domineering demeanor" of the king. Furniture production does not hesitate to use materials, pay attention to straight lines and fine craftsmanship, and also require gorgeous decoration. The surface of furniture is often inlaid with genuine treasures, which is deeply influenced by court culture and has a strong "heavenly" atmosphere. Due to the excessive pursuit of luxury decoration, practical features are not accepted by ordinary people.

Guangzuo furniture is a leader in the field of furniture in the middle and late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. Widely used furniture materials are not stingy, and the shape is heavy; The materials are the same, do not mix with each other, and pay attention to "one wood and one device"; Paint is not used much in the production process, so that the natural texture of wood is fully exposed; In the structure, modeling and decoration, learn from western architecture.
