What are the stylistic features of Zhuxianzhen woodblock prints?
The reason why Zhuxianzhen woodblock prints are known as the famous national New Year paintings together with Yangliuqing of Tianjin, Taohuayu of Jiangsu, Weifang of Shandong, and Mianzhu of Sichuan is determined by its unique style.
Zhu Xian Town New Year paintings are full of composition, rough and concise lines, simple and exaggerated modeling, and fresh and bright colors. Characters with big heads and small bodies have both comedic effects and feel proportional and comfortable. In some places, the faces of the characters in the New Year's paintings are decorated with red cheeks, while the New Year's paintings in Zhuxian Town do not have red cheeks, which looks very natural and harmonious.
In China's traditional folk crafts, people often make or paint tigers as yellow or red tigers, while the New Year's paintings of Zhuxianzhen are purple tigers. This kind of creative method, which is not bound by tradition, has been valued and praised by professionals.
