The Origin and Customs of Furi Holiday

Pseudonym of Festival: Furi Holiday

Time: one day at the beginning, one day at the middle and one day at the end

Furi was a holiday in ancient times. According to the records in Book II of Tang Dynasty and Official Department of Shangshu, and Records of Song Dynasty, the 116th Official III, Furi was a day off. There are three days' sleep, and the rest days' holiday includes three days. It is clearly recorded in Wenchang Miscellaneous Records in the Song Dynasty that the first, middle and last days are all off for one day.

the origin of festivals

the custom of hiding in the sun comes from people's aversion to the extreme heat. People in Qin and Han dynasties understood the changes of cold and summer with the concept of yin and yang and five elements, and thought that the yang was flourishing and the yin was about to rise during the dog days, so it was called hiding in the sun. In the Tang Dynasty's "Hua Ji Li", it was said that the head of June was set by Qin Shihuang, and in the Historical Records, it was said that the festival of three days in June was set by Qin Degong, who was the ancestor of Qin Shihuang and was several hundred years older than Qin Shihuang. Despite the difference of hundreds of years, it is said that Furi originated in Qin dynasty, and the origin of Furi is very early.

as the saying goes, "heat is in dog days", which is the hottest time of the year. The ancient book explained: "Those who lie down, hide and avoid the summer heat." That is to say, crouching is hiding from the heat.

@ What do you mean?

to put it bluntly, "hidden" means to get down and not move. It's so hot, it's a way to lie still.

@ When did you fall into the ambush

Hua Ji Li at the age of four said that the third Geng after the summer solstice was the first ambush, the fourth Geng was the middle ambush, and the last Geng after beginning of autumn was the last ambush. After the summer solstice of the twenty-four solar terms, the third Geng day is the first one, and the fourth Geng day is the middle one. There are some special provisions on the last one, so it must be the first Geng day after beginning of autumn. The ancients thought that the hottest summer belonged to fire, while Geng belonged to gold, and fire made gold (gold was afraid of being melted by fire). By Geng Day, gold had to be hidden, so it fell into ambush on Geng Day. This is China's "Yin-Yang and Five Elements Theory", so you can learn about it yourself when you grow up.

The Year of Hua Ji Li: Jin Zhi explained that beginning of autumn replaced fire with gold, and gold was afraid of fire, so it was bound to fall on the Geng day, and those who were Geng were also gold, so it was said to fall.

when introducing the calendar, Gengri said that it refers to the day with the word "Geng" in the "Ganzhi Jiri Law". According to the "Ganzhi Jiri Law", a Gengri appears every 1 days, so after the summer solstice, it will fall into ambush in less than 3 days.

@ How many days does it last?

generally one volt is ten days. However, in some years, beginning of autumn is a little late, and there are two Geng days between the last and the middle, so some years in the middle are 2 days. So some years of dog days are thirty days, and some years are forty days.

the custom of staying in Japan

The nature of staying in Japan lies in hiding. In the Han Dynasty, the custom of staying in Japan was that government offices had a holiday, and people stayed behind closed doors. In the Tang Dynasty, "Sui Hua Ji Li" recorded various customs in Furi, such as rice congee (cān), eating soup cakes, and recommending wheat and melons.

@ what is a recommended melon?

recommendation means offering sacrifices. Wheat is wheat, melons are melons, and recommending wheat and melons means offering sacrifices to ancestors with newly harvested wheat and fresh melons. There is a saying in the "Four People's Moon Order" that "when you first fell, you sacrificed wheat melons to your ancestors. The custom of offering sacrifices to ancestors with fresh wheat and melons at the latest in the Han Dynasty.

The Chronicle of Jingchu's Years Old records that it is evil to eat soup and cakes when the sun falls in June. "The Chronicle of Jingchu's Years Old" said that the custom of eating soup cakes on a rainy day existed in the Three Kingdoms period.

The Chronicle of Jingchu's Age ... According to Wei's Spring and Autumn Period: "He Yan leaned over to eat soup and cakes, took a towel to wipe his sweat, and his face was Jiao Ran, but he knew it was not rich powder." Then Furi soup cake has come since Wei.

San (cān) rice congee, San means eating, and San rice congee means eating rice congee. "Hua Ji Li" records that Xie An drinks hot white porridge in the dog days of hot summer.

Summary

Fu Ri originated in Qin Dynasty. According to the theory of Yin and Yang and Five Elements, Fu Ri should be dormant and take a vacation to escape the heat. Until the Tang and Song Dynasties, there were holidays in the dog days, and there were three holidays in the first, middle and last dog days. After the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there was no record of the holiday, which may have been cancelled. There is no legal holiday in modern Furi, but some units give some cooling fees.
