What are the types of cylinder arrangements? What are the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages?

1. Inline: the advantage lies in the simple structure, low cost, so most of the small displacement inline, the disadvantage lies in the vibration of the larger.

2. V-type: the advantage lies in the compact structure, smoothness is good, the disadvantage lies in the more in-line expensive, suitable for large displacement.

3. Horizontally opposed (can be regarded as a 180-degree angle V-arrangement): the advantage is that the center of gravity is ultra-low, and the stability of high speed is very good, the disadvantage is that at present there are only two car makers in the world to use this kind of way - Porsche and Subaru.

Of course there are exceptions; Mazda's rotor engine has no pistons at all.
