The Spring Festival couplet, formerly known as the Peach Symbol, is an important symbol of the Chinese New Year. When people put up spring couplets and blessings in front of their houses, it means that the Spring Festival is officially kicked off. Wang Anshi's "New Year's Day" says, "The sound of firecrackers is the first year of the year, and the spring breeze sends warmth into the TuSu. A thousand doors and tens of thousands of houses are about to rise, always replacing the new peach with the old one." Every Spring Festival, no matter in the city or in the countryside, every family picks beautiful red spring scrolls and puts them on the door to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new, and to add to the festive atmosphere. Traditionally, spring scrolls are written with brushes, but nowadays they are usually made outside with machines. There are more types of spring couplets, including street door pairs and house door pairs.

There was a man of letters in Sichuan who claimed that he wanted to go to Beijing to deliver an elegy for Yuan Shikai. The townspeople heard, shocked and confused, open his written couplets, read: "Yuan Shikai thousand years, long live the Chinese people". When people read it, they couldn't help but be dumbfounded. The literati deliberately asked, "What are you laughing at?" A straight-talking young man said, "How can the three words 'Yuan Shikai' in the first couplet match the four words 'Chinese people' in the second couplet?" The scholar laughed and said, "That's right, Yuan Shikai just can't match the Chinese people!"
