What is the aesthetic view of ancient Greece?
The personality characteristics of ancient Greeks give people a very delicate and sensitive feeling. They try to understand and control, like clear and fixed outlines, attach importance to the real world and life, and praise the strength and materials of humanism. This is their advantage. What was the aesthetic view of the ancient Greeks? There is a fundamental position that harmony is beauty, and harmony is beauty. In their aesthetics, they attach great importance to harmony and numbers, that is, they are rational, so they create a standard of classical beauty, which is what we call beauty, elegance and harmony. Of course, everyone has a different explanation of beauty, and many aestheticians also have different explanations. Some people may think beautiful or ugly, which is very different. But the beauty appreciated by the ancient Greeks was basically something like beauty, elegance and harmony. Pythagoras, a great aesthete in ancient Greece, believed that harmony was the first category of aesthetics. He said, "The real contingency of everything in the world is not such uncertain substances as water, gas and cloud gas at all." He believes that "the fundamental contingency should be the relationship between number and quantity, and beauty is a kind of harmony composed of a certain number of relationships, which is beauty."
For example, we should take music as an example to understand the volume, the length and the pitch. These elements are actually a mathematical relationship, that is, the relationship between number and quantity. So is sculpture. Sculpture has a problem of proportion. For example, in our previous textbooks, a person's whole is about seven or seven and a half heads, and foreigners are eight or eight and a half heads. What is this? It's a quantitative relationship, so it often happens when we make sculptures. Maybe when we make a super-large sculpture, we should consider that the person who looks at this sculpture is so small, and if we look at a sculpture as small as an ant, he will have a deformation and a visual perspective problem. Therefore, if you have mastered this possible high place, the proportion will be lengthened and raised, and it can only be adjusted when you look at the bottom. Otherwise, you may let it look at the bottom in normal proportion, for example.
A teacher in our sculpture department once asked a question in the proposition, and the topic was-"Please be half human." After reading this topic, I don't think there are any numbers involved. This topic may be difficult for students, or some students will misunderstand it. The result is this. If we ask this question, if students only do the upper or lower body, or the left or right body, or the front or back film, is it half? If the students do this, the teacher has no answer and can't explain. He has to do this. Later, we asked the teacher what this half meant. He said that this is our jargon, which means a statue half the height of a real person, that is, to make a sculpture. Later, I couldn't make it clear, because half of Yao Ming and half of Pan Changjiang are still different, so it's better to mark the size, for example, to make a person's height 80 cm or 60 cm, which is limited by numbers and is very important.
The same is true of architecture, which is proportional and has the best proportion. A building can't be made to look unstable, and it can't always give people a temporary feeling. To be stable, there must be a harmonious proportion. So there are many aesthetic elements in it, and the proportional relationship of numbers is fully reflected in it.
There were many aesthetes in ancient Greece. In addition to Pythagoras just mentioned, there are also famous Heraclitus, Democritus, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and so on, but these are the most famous. There were so many people studying aesthetics in ancient Greece and so many aestheticians. Is there any reason why we can't make art so fine and good? So the ancient Greeks did create an elegant and harmonious model of beauty for us.
