Extended data

Couplets originated from the ancient Spring Festival couplets, including Taofu and Chuntie. In the heyday of the Qing Dynasty, the types of couplets included title couplets, birthday couplets, elegiac couplets, Spring Festival couplets, ritual couplets and industry couplets.

But in general, it is still practical. Today, the style of couplets has been derived from the category of pure literature in practicality, which makes it have the same function as poetry as "enjoying the scenery and complaining".

So if we classify couplets now, we can divide them into two categories, namely, practical couplets and literary couplets. Of course, the two are relative, and practical couplets should also be literary, but practicality should be the main feature.

Practical couplets include: title couplets, birthday couplets, elegiac couplets, gift couplets, Spring Festival couplets, industry couplets and propaganda couplets. The same feature is that this couplet is not created for the author's own appreciation, but for everyone to see or give to someone for entertainment. Therefore, the creation of this couplet must be biased and considered in consideration of its specific purpose.

Literary couplets include: tourist couplets, sentimental couplets, character couplets, object-chanting couplets, discussion couplets, self-titled couplets and so on. Their common feature is that the purpose of creation is nothing more than to express their feelings or opinions, and they are regarded as a pure literary work without carrying secular practical functions.

From the perspective of creation, practical couplets tend to be "practical", and their specific occasions, scenes and audiences should be fully considered. Therefore, there should be some "scruples" when creating, and personally, it is not appropriate to write them too obscure.

Of course, literature and art should also be used in language and conception, not "popular". There are few restrictions on literary couplets, as long as they can fully express the author's own temperament and views. In creation, we can also "let go" and give full play to the author's creative space.
