The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival:

Legend has it that after Qu Yuan's death, the people of Chu mourned so much that they went to the riverside to pay homage to him. The fishermen rowed up their boats and salvaged his real body on the river. The fishermen took out the rice balls, eggs and other food prepared for Qu Yuan and threw them into the river, saying that the fish, dragons, shrimps and crabs would not bite the body of Dr. Qu if they had enough to eat. In May 2006, the State Council included it in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list; in September 2009, UNESCO formally considered and approved the inclusion of the Dragon Boat Festival in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage, making it the first Chinese festival to be selected as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage.
