In Stockholm, the sun does not rise until 9 a.m. and sets at 3 p.m. From then on, the long night is shorter and the bright day is longer. St. Lucia was a saint known for her charity. She lived in Sicily in the 4th century A.D. and was an Italian Christian. Some say she traveled to Sweden and that December 13th was her fast day. There is a story of how St. Lucia became a saint - a man fell in love with St. Lucia, who did not love him. Her mother wanted to marry her to this man and she refused. The man was about to burn her to death. St. Lucia prayed to God to give her strength to get through this. Because of her charity, the prayer was answered. St. Lucia was not burned, so the man took out another sword and stabbed St. Lucia in the throat, killing her. There is another version of this story with a similar legend --- St. Lucia was a very loving girl, and there was a man who loved her very much, but St. Lucia did not love him. The man loved St. Lucia's eyes the most, and St. Lucia gave him her eyes. But a miracle happened: St. Lucia grew a new pair of eyes, more beautiful and more charming than the old ones. The man still wanted the eyes, and St. Lucia refused. So the man killed her with a knife.
