What are the advantages of network interpersonal communication compared with traditional interpersonal communication?

Internet interpersonal communication is a form of communication corresponding to the traditional face-to-face interpersonal communication (FTF). There are two main ways: email and online chat. As a brand-new way of interpersonal communication, the network provides many new interpersonal experience. In fact, generally speaking, network communication can be simplified into two parts: man-machine communication and virtual interpersonal communication to some extent. Among them, man-machine communication mainly refers to the interaction between users and network terminals such as computers, and the research in this area mainly focuses on the design of man-machine interface and information system. Virtual interpersonal communication focuses on the psychological behavior and skills of network users in the virtual environment.

Judging from the retrieval results of online academic papers in current journals, it is Mao Lina who started the research on online interpersonal communication earlier in China. His "Looking at CMC Interpersonal Communication from the Perspective of Traditional Interpersonal Communication" comprehensively discusses the definition, foundation, motivation, nature, means, influencing factors, development prospects and evaluation of CMC interpersonal communication, and refers to the traditional interpersonal communication theory. Subsequently, Peng Lan's Interpersonal Communication in the Network made a preliminary study and analysis of the ways and characteristics of interpersonal communication in the network, and explained the possible impact of interpersonal communication on the physical world and human socialization. This paper also discusses how the audience and disseminators use the network interpersonal communication, and its analysis is deeper than the former, touching on the similarities and differences between the network interpersonal communication and the real interpersonal communication and the influence of the network interpersonal communication.

It was Chen Yonghua who studied the influence of Internet on interpersonal communication from a unique perspective. In his article "The Split Mentality and Self-adjustment of Internet Users in Internet Interpersonal Communication", he pointed out that the current mentality of Internet users can be divided into concealment and disclosure, trust and suspicion, drift and intoxication and their negative effects. It is considered that it is wise to understand and adjust yourself correctly in the current situation to adapt to the survival of the network. The uniqueness of this paper is that it is the first time to discuss the mentality of both parties in network interpersonal communication and the social impact brought by network interpersonal communication from the perspective of ethics under the background of new technology. In addition, it is worth mentioning Shi Rongrong's "Real Communication of Virtual World-Analysis of Interpersonal Communication on the Internet"; Wang Heng and Liu Xiaoge, Analysis of Internet Interpersonal Communication; Zhao Jiaxin and Shine Wong's rhetorical analysis of interpersonal communication on the Internet. The analysis angles of these articles are very innovative, but some viewpoints do not seem to jump out of the previous ones.

Therefore, as far as the theoretical research of interpersonal communication on the Internet is concerned, there are not many achievements, and its progress can only be regarded as the initial theoretical description and introduction. The above research is only a study on the theory of interpersonal communication on the Internet, and its greatest significance lies in its programmatic construction, which points out the direction of efforts for the following research.

Traditional interpersonal communication includes two forms: verbal communication and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication mainly refers to the communication between language and words, while nonverbal communication usually refers to those factors that are of information value to the exporter or receiver except verbal factors in a certain communication environment. These factors can be man-made or environmental, such as the communicator's gestures, facial expressions, sitting posture, tone, etc. For the convenience of research and narration, we can refer to the traditional division of interpersonal communication, and further divide interpersonal communication in the network virtual environment into verbal communication and non-verbal communication, in which non-verbal communication includes pictures, animations, symbols and other forms that can reflect the communicators' communication psychology; The rest, such as language and writing, belong to the verbal communication system. Here, we sum up the achievements, shortcomings and the research focus that should be devoted to in the future.

First, online voice communication

At least so far, in the network environment, the communication between people in the network interpersonal communication is basically realized through verbal communication, so the basic foothold of discussing the network interpersonal communication should be to analyze the words of both parties in the virtual environment. Therefore, many researchers have noticed the importance of verbal communication research under the network environment and conducted some preliminary research. However, most of the current research generally focuses on the analysis of the form, characteristics and style of network language, and many achievements have been made in this respect, among which the papers of scholars from Hong Kong and Taiwan are the most representative. A typical example is Zhou (200 1), who found that the dialogue in the network has the characteristics of writing and speaking, as well as the form of dialogue and monologue. Due to the characteristics of the media, a unique computer-based communication culture has been formed. Including no time and order restrictions, participants can speak at the same time, often quote predecessors' information, develop auxiliary characters, use abbreviations, simplify grammatical structure and so on. Wu Min (200 1) classified the new words appearing on the Internet, including old words with new meanings, innovative words, abbreviations and symbolic words, and further discussed the characteristics of new words on the Internet. Pan Meicen (2002) discussed the network language with Chinese theory and found that users often use symbols to enhance the phonetic effect. New words and modal particles are frequently used; There are many typos; Free use expands punctuation marks and even produces phonetic effects; Use spaces or line breaks to separate sentences; Most of them belong to colloquial style and other phenomena. Among these features, modal particles and new word formation are the most commonly used, so it can be inferred that the freedom of network language is quite developed.

As far as the mainland is concerned, up to now, the number of articles published by domestic journals about online speech communication has reached 147, and most of them have appeared in the last two or three years. These articles mainly discuss the structure, style and characteristics of e-mail and online chat languages. Compared with the research results of scholars in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the mainland's research in this field is almost the same, and the research methods mostly use speculative methods to describe and summarize online speech communication. While Hongkong and Taiwan Province mostly adopt empirical methods. They conducted a detailed follow-up study on some existing cases, and then made statistics and induction on the data, so the results were more objective.

In terms of monographs, due to the limitation of conditions, we don't know which monographs have been published by Hong Kong and Taiwan. But as far as the mainland is concerned, so far there have been three dictionaries that systematically study and summarize network languages. From June 5th, 2000 to 10, Hainan Publishing House published the Internet Fashion Dictionary edited by Mr. Wen Yian, which is the first online language dictionary in China. This paper summarizes the argot, proverb, technical term, organization and company, digital language and so on in the network age. In June, 20001,China Economic Publishing House published the China Dictionary of Network Language edited by Mr. Yu Genyuan, which is the first China Dictionary of Network Language compiled by linguists so far. The third book is the online dictionary "Birds in Jinshan" edited by many netizens in June 2003, which sorts out and summarizes the innovative parts of online language in recent two or three years and collects more than a thousand online chat words. It has not yet been published, and its form is based on the open network text, which has become a hot spot in various forums through hyperlinks, and is provided to the majority of netizens for continuous revision and supplement in reposts.

One thing that these articles and monographs have in common, whether in Hongkong, Taiwan Province or mainland China, is that most of them summarize and analyze the style and characteristics of online speech from the perspective of pure language. As far as language is concerned, the analysis level is relatively simple. Limited to the perspective of language, that is, few people think and summarize why there is such a phenomenon of verbal communication from the perspective of communication. What is the communicative psychology of both parties in online verbal communication, and what is the social significance behind online verbal communication? What's the difference between online verbal communication and real verbal communication? Why is there such a difference? Few people have studied such a problem. Therefore, as far as speech communication in network communication is concerned, we believe that the next research focus should shift from the form and style characteristics of network speech to the skills and laws of network speech. Because the difference between online verbal communication and real verbal communication mainly lies in the emergence of a new medium-network. Therefore, the core question of thinking should be: as a new media-network, what kind of influence does its interpersonal communication have on language? Is this influence positive or negative, and will it continue with the development of the network? What are the skills and rules of verbal communication in network interpersonal communication? These problems are worthy of attention in future research.

Second, the network non-verbal communication

Communicative scholars have found that nonverbal communication seems to play a more important role in communicative activities. Under the new technical background, is there any more important non-verbal communication besides verbal communication in network interpersonal communication?

Although the network technology is developing continuously, at least so far, the network can only provide us with a virtual environment. It is impossible for people to express their feelings with their own body movements in the virtual environment, so the communication between people mainly depends on language. (In fact, even if visual communication is popular in the future, netizens want to ensure that their performance in the virtual network environment is different from the real environment. It will still rely heavily on language for communication. In the interpersonal communication in the virtual network environment, there are also alternative forms that can express nonverbal communication effects, such as gestures, facial expressions, sitting posture and tone of voice of communicators in the traditional communication environment. These forms are mainly images, animations and various self-created symbols. Some researchers have called these forms electronic paralanguages.

For example, Turner (1988, quoted from Pan Meicen, 2002) pointed out that there are four common electronic adverbs: figure, homophonic, metonymy and abbreviation. Lu (1997, quoted from Pan Meicen, 2002) divides the use of graphic symbols in electronic paralanguage into four categories: expression state, pronunciation and intonation, action and personal image. Expression state refers to words such as smiling and crying; Mood category refers to symbols that can express mood effect, such as ~; Action class is a symbol with action meaning. For example, p (^o^) q is like cheering for each other. Personal image is a symbol to describe appearance, such as @@ @ wearing glasses. These descriptions and analyses are quite detailed and concrete.

There are few research achievements in this field in mainland academic circles. Up to now, there are almost only two or three articles in China journals devoted to network nonverbal communication. For example, Liu and Qu's On Symbols in Network Language and On Body Language Symbols in Computer Network Verbal Communication, these two articles introduce symbolic communication in network nonverbal communication, classify symbols and discuss their functions in communication, and think that their main functions are to supplement or modify the needs of verbal communication. Many other articles only mentioned this point in passing when talking about the spread of online speech, and did not make a special discussion.

As far as the overall research status is concerned, the current research on nonverbal communication is limited to the classification of graphic symbols and the interpretation of their functions. The results of most studies show that the introduction of electronic paralegals is actually due to the fact that the communication of computer media is mainly based on words, lacking situational clues, and it is difficult to convey nonverbal information, such as expressions and gestures, so the electronic paralegals have emerged as a method to compensate nonverbal clues. In other words, the function of electronic paralegal is actually exactly the same as the non-verbal communication function in the traditional environment.

However, electronic paralanguage covers a wide range, including not only graphics and animation, but also homophones and abbreviations, which overlap with oral communication. Generally speaking, the form of nonverbal communication in the network virtual environment is obviously simpler than that in the real environment, which is far from enough to clearly express the mood of the communicator, let alone the potential communicative purpose of the communicator.

Compared with the previous research on verbal communication, the research angle of nonverbal communication has jumped out of the framework of pure language and considered more from the perspective of symbolic communication, which is undoubtedly a great progress in research. However, the existing research seems to simply borrow the theory of nonverbal communication in reality to explain the phenomenon of nonverbal communication in online interpersonal communication (that is, electronic paralanguage). For example, some research results show that there are the following situations in nonverbal communication in online interpersonal communication:

1. Use pictures or animations to refer to the communicator's psychology. When we communicate online, we sometimes notice that some users often add some pictures or animations to them when chatting or posting. Although we can't think that all these behaviors contain certain meanings, it is undeniable that some pictures or animations represent the mood of the communicator at that time.

2. Use various symbols to refer to certain meanings. For example:) smile; P stands for tongue; & gt:& lt express anger, etc. The usage and meaning of various symbols are described in detail in many documents, so I won't repeat them here.

There is nothing wrong with the laws summed up in this way, but the above laws are also applicable to nonverbal communication in real interpersonal communication. In this case, the uniqueness of online nonverbal communication has not been studied at all. That is, the uniqueness of its regular characteristics has not been discussed in the new media environment. Therefore, the next research can be considered from the following aspects: For example, is there a gender difference in the use of nonverbal communication between men and women in online interpersonal communication? Is there a certain law to follow in its communication environment? What does it have to do with online speech communication? How does the phenomenon of nonverbal communication on the Internet come into being with this new media? What is its future development trend?

Firstly, the interpersonal communication on the network is discussed, and then it is classified into two categories: verbal communication and nonverbal communication. This classification may help us to understand the true nature of network interpersonal communication, and future research will focus on the skills and laws of network interpersonal communication. More importantly, it can help us to understand the difference between interpersonal communication in the network virtual environment and that in the traditional environment. Can we use our accumulated interpersonal experience in the real environment to guide interpersonal communication in the virtual environment? If so, how to guide? How to solve the problem of identifying the identity of the disseminator and the authenticity of the speech in the network interpersonal communication by summarizing the skills and laws of online verbal and nonverbal communication can alleviate the current network crime problem to a certain extent, which is undoubtedly of great significance to maintaining social stability.

In a word, the study of interpersonal communication on the Internet not only needs us to further construct the theory of interpersonal communication, but also needs us to participate in online observation, conduct a lot of case tracking analysis, think about the characteristics, skills and laws of verbal communication and nonverbal communication in interpersonal communication on the Internet from the perspective of new media, and summarize the laws from the practice of a large number of netizens, so as to construct or innovate a complete set of interpersonal communication theory on the Internet.
