Where did the name of Shuhe come from?

Shuhe River originates from the southern foot of Yishan Mountain in Shandong Province and flows southward into Jiangsu Province.

Shuhe River, called "Shushui" in ancient times, was recorded in the book "Li Zhouzhi's Sex" in the Warring States Period: "Zhengdong is called Qingzhou ... and it is immersed in release and relaxation."

Shu water, the ancients also wrote "Shu water", "Hanshu Geography": "Shu water goes south to Xiapi and enters Si." Yan Shigu in Tang Dynasty noted: "Shu water is Shu water." ① The word "Shu" has been simplified to "Shu", and this article is still written as "Shu" for the need of textual research.

It can be seen from the notes on the word "Shu" in Shuo Wen Jie Zi and Ci Hai that "Shu" is a special word for Shu Shui (or Shu He), and there is no other meaning. Therefore, to explain the origin of the name of Shuhe, we must make a fuss about the word "Shu".

It is almost absurd to think that "the water used by ancient magicians to cast spells was named after it merged into this river" in Juxian Toponymy. Because divination and the art of ghosts and witches were common in various vassal States in the pre-Qin period, people at that time believed it, and it was not just the ancients in the Shuhe River Basin. Moreover, the meanings of "wizard" and "witchcraft" are the extended meanings of the word "wizard", not the original meaning. Therefore, using the meanings of "wizard" and "witchcraft" to explain the origin of the name "Shushui" is just a matter of reading literature and creating ideas.

"Shuowen Hangbu" notes: "Shu, Tao is also in the city. From the line, the sound of surgery. " Xu Kai, a philologist of the Five Dynasties, said in "Biography of Shuowen Jiezi System": "Daoism in the city is also the study of the avenue." It can be seen that the original meaning of the word "Shu" is the road, and the name "Shu Shui" should be related to the road.

According to Bai Shouyi's General History of China, during the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a north-south traffic artery in the east of China, which went north to Linzi, the capital of Qi State? The acupoints are located in Zibo? Snow, Xu from the south? Near Sihong County, Jiangsu Province? Snow, passing through Mulingguan and Juguo? Today's caves in Juxian County, Shandong Province? Snow, Tan Guo? What is the point in the north of Tancheng County, Shandong Province? It's snowing. Because this road is "the road to the east", its importance is slightly lower than that of Zhongyuan Avenue. (2) This view is consistent with Xu Kai's "Learning of Avenue", so this road can be called "Shu" road. From the geographical point of view, the two routes are the same and interdependent, so the ancients called this river, which is located on the side of the traffic artery and is the "road to the east", "technical water".

After "Shu water" became the name of this river, the ancients added "water" to the word "Shu" in order to distinguish the meaning of the word. Note in the Chinese Dictionary: "It is the name of water with the same sound as" Shu ". Pian Yu Ministry of Water: Water, water. Fishing place in Langya, Ren Xu'. The jade tablet quoted here is a book written by Liang Gu in the Southern Dynasties, which shows that before the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the variant characters of the word "number" also had the writing methods of "number" and "mesh number". The word "Shu" is not included in Shuo Wen Jie Zi, which shows that this word was not commonly used in Han Dynasty. When Qin Shihuang unified the characters, he wrote "Shu" as "Shu", but a few people still used these two characters, so "Shu Shui" and "Pian Yu" appeared in Hanshu.
