What is e-sports?

E-sports is a kind of sports in which electronic games reach the level of "competition". E-sports is a competition that uses electronic equipment as sports equipment and combines intelligence and physical strength between people. E-sports can exercise and improve participants' thinking ability, reaction ability, physical coordination ability and willpower, and cultivate team spirit, and professional e-sports also have higher requirements for physical strength. E-sports is also a profession, similar to non-video game competitions such as chess. E-sports has two basic characteristics: electronic and competitive.

"Electronic" is its way and means, which means that this sport is carried out with the help of various software and hardware with information technology as the core and the environment created by it, similar to the equipment and venues in traditional sports. In e-sports, "equipment" depends on information technology, which is the difference between e-sports and traditional sports.

"Competition" refers to the essential feature of sports, that is, confrontation. As a sport, confrontation is the most basic feature. There are many categories and events of e-sports, but the core must be confrontation and competition.

The view that "online games = e-sports" is wrong. With the development of the game industry and the continuous upgrading of e-sports projects, e-sports is no longer a stand-alone game limited to IP direct connection or LAN. Although online games are very different in terms of distribution, operation, payment methods and game platform construction, this does not affect some online games with strong balance and antagonism to join e-sports projects. Whether it is a single-player game (single-player game) or an online game (multiplayer game), it can be called e-sports in a broad sense as long as it meets the two characteristics of "electronic" and "competitive".

The main differences are:

First, the basic attributes are different. Online games are entertainment games, and e-sports are sports. Online games are mainly simulation and role-playing for the purpose of pursuing feelings in the virtual world, while e-sports is an organized intellectual confrontation between people in the virtual environment created by information technology.

Second, e-sports has clear and unified rules of the game, the biggest feature is strict time and round restrictions, while online games lack clear and unified rules of the game, and there is no time and round restrictions, which is easy to make people addicted;

Third, e-sports competition is a competition between athletes, with a fair and just sportsmanship, and the outcome is determined by the intellectual and physical confrontation between people, while online games are mainly the communication and interaction between man and machine or between people, and do not necessarily need the confrontation between people to judge the result;

Fourth, e-sports focuses on thinking ability, reaction ability, coordination ability of mind and limbs, overall situation, willpower and team spirit, while some online games can gain advantages only by recharging, which is the main difference between e-sports and online games.
