What are the Six Arts of a Gentleman

The Six Arts of a Gentleman is simply the six skills of etiquette, music, archery, imperialism, calligraphy, and mathematics. It is the education system of the Zhou Dynasty nobility. It was used to educate and train students of the nobility, i.e., to "raise the children of the state".

Rituals, i.e., etiquette, five rites, including auspiciousness, bad luck, guests, military, Jia, five rituals, teaching people how to sacrifice and pray for blessings, funeral and condolences, reception of guests, expedition drill, as well as interpersonal interaction in the details of the food and drink, clothing and so on. It also includes the five beliefs of loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, wisdom and faith.

There are two ways to describe the Six Arts: one is that they refer to rituals, music, archery, the arts, calligraphy, and mathematics. The other says, "six arts" that is, the six scriptures, that is, "Yi", "book", "poetry", "ritual", "music", "Spring and Autumn Annals" also.

The Six Arts are six compulsory subjects for ancient Chinese gentlemen, and their contents include five rites, six music, five archery, five imperial, six books, and nine numbers. Regarding the implementation of the six arts education, it is carried out in an orderly manner according to the age of the students and the depth of the curriculum. There are two types of education: minor arts and major arts.
