The difference between lidar and millimeter-wave radar

The differences between lidar and millimeter-wave radar are introduced as follows:

In terms of working principle, lidar and millimeter-wave radar are basically similar. They all use echo imaging to construct the detected object, which is equivalent to the difference between human eyes detection and bat ultrasonic detection. However, the electromagnetic wave emitted by lidar is linear, mainly in the form of light particles, while the electromagnetic wave emitted by millimeter wave radar is cone beam, and the antenna in this band mainly uses electromagnetic radiation.

In terms of detection accuracy, lidar has the advantages of high detection accuracy, wide detection range and strong stability. In terms of accuracy, the detection distance of millimeter-wave radar is directly restricted by frequency band loss (high-frequency radar must be used for detection), so it is impossible to perceive pedestrians and accurately model all obstacles around. This is not as good as lidar.

As far as anti-jamming ability is concerned, lidar can't be turned on in bad weather such as rain, snow, fog and sandstorm, because it is detected by emitting light beams, which is greatly affected by the environment. Millimeter wave seeker has a strong ability to penetrate fog, smoke and dust, so it can detect in bad weather. In this respect, millimeter-wave radar is superior.

From the price point of view, lidar is more accurate than millimeter wave radar in ranging and identifying obstacles. However, because the amount of data collected by lidar far exceeds that of millimeter-wave radar, it needs a higher-performance processor to process the data, so the cost is high and the price is naturally more expensive. But the accuracy of lidar can be more guaranteed.

Through the above comparison, we find that lidar and millimeter-wave radar have their own advantages and disadvantages, and no one can replace anyone. They just play a supporting role.
