As early as 1936, China's first-ancientists such as Yin Da and Liang Siyong from the Institute of History and Language of the former Academia Sinica began to excavate the two city sites. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Institute of Archaeology of Shandong Province respectively conducted many excavations at the four major sites of the Two Cities, Dantu, Donghayu, and Yaowangcheng, etc. Since 1995, the Sino-US joint archaeological team has carried out in-depth investigations, explorations, and excavations of the area centered on the Two Cities for nine years, and has obtained rich physical data. On this basis, in-depth research has been carried out on the appearance and characteristics of Longshan culture in Rizhao area as well as its position and role in the development of ancient Chinese culture, and fruitful research results have been achieved, which have played an important role in exploring the cultural appearance of Longshan era and studying the origin of ancient civilization. Rizhao Longshan culture display, through the display of stone tools, jade, pottery and other unearthed artifacts, as well as animal specimens, architectural relics, etc., especially the display of pottery-making process and architectural technology, reproduces the development of productive forces in the primitive society, the emergence of classes, and demonstrates the law of social development and progress.
