Folk customs in early spring

(1) whipping spring cattle

In ancient times, rulers of all dynasties held a ceremony to whip spring on this day, attracting spring cattle to beat them, driving away their inertia, announcing the beginning of spring ploughing, encouraging farming and developing production. Different places have different customs. In some places, pasting spring cattle is to paste paper into the shape of spring cattle with rice or flour, put whole grains in its "belly", and then burst it with a whip, and the grains will flow out, symbolizing this year's bumper harvest. In some places, yellow paper painted with spring cattle is also called "Spring Cattle Map", in which yellow refers to land and spring cattle refers to farming.

In the beginning of spring, eating spring vegetables, spring cakes, spring rolls, spring boxes and other customs are popular in most parts of northern China, as well as eating radish, which is called "biting spring". The Historical Records of the Ming Dynasty records: "In beginning of spring, no one chewed radish, saying' biting spring'."

(3) Spring outing

Spring outing is also called "stepping in the spring" and "welcoming the spring" among the people. Various folk performances are held on this day, and the rehearsal is called "Spring Performance". On the same day, beginning of spring officially ushered in the Spring Festival, and people dressed up and celebrated with gongs and drums. Another function of it is to remind people not to miss the good opportunity and pay close attention to agriculture. (7) Dai Chunsheng, Jian Chunsheng and pasting doors and windows.

People have a headdress called "Sheng", which is divided into Zansheng, Huasheng and Rensheng, many of which are made of paper. Women will cut out decorations such as swallows, willows, flowers, butterflies, phoenixes, moths, grasshoppers and chickens.
