How to make glass?
1. Preparation of raw materials: The main raw materials for glass are silica (e.g., quartz sand), sodium carbonate (soda lime), and calcium carbonate (limestone). These raw materials need to be processed such as crushing and sieving to obtain the proper particle size and purity.
2. Melting: The prepared raw materials are mixed in a certain proportion and put into the glass kiln for melting. The glass kiln usually uses gas, electricity or fuel oil as a heat source to heat the raw materials to a high temperature (about 1500°C) to melt them into a liquid.
3. Molding: The molten glass liquid can be molded by different methods. Common molding methods include float method, blowing method, extrusion method and molding method. The float method is the most commonly used method, in which a continuous flat glass is formed by pouring the molten glass liquid evenly over a pool of molten tin, allowing it to float over the pool and gradually cool to form a continuous flat glass.
4. Cooling and Annealing: After molding, the glass is subjected to a cooling process that allows it to gradually cool down and solidify. During the cooling process, the glass will gradually become hard. The glass then needs to be annealed, i.e., heated again to a lower temperature to relieve internal stresses and improve the strength and stability of the glass.
5. Processing and Decoration: Cooled and cured glass can be subjected to various processes and decorations, such as cutting, grinding, edging, and burnishing. These steps can be customized to meet different needs depending on the end use of the glass.
The above is the general manufacturing process of glass, different types of glass may have some special manufacturing steps or processes.
