Musical Instruments Translated from the Buyi Language

Leyu

Zhenfeng Buyi folk musical instrument Leyu is a traditional folk musical instrument created by Buyi people. The original name of Leyu is "Leyu", because this instrument is played like suona, and the cicada is used as a bug whistle, which gives out the song of the cicada bug, so we call it "Leyu". Later, it gradually became a medium for the Buyi to talk about love, so it is also called "Leyu" or "Leyou" (Leyu: Buyi language, that is, to invite friends).

Leyu has taken deep root in the lives of the Buyi people and has been passed down from generation to generation. Leyu is a folk double-reed vertical joy instrument of the Buyi people. Shaped like suona, no bowl, the upper set of insects whistle blowing, can be played alone or for singing accompaniment, popular in the vast areas of Qianxinan.

Leue's scale range

Leue can send out (a, c1, d1, e1, g1, a1) 6 tones, the range is an octave. The sound is crisp and sweet, similar to the sound of the oboe, with a strong local flavor. The playing technique is similar to that of the suona, and it often utilizes the cyclic air exchange method, which makes the tunes played mellow and smooth, beautiful and expressive. It is mainly used to play the Lelu (or Lelang) tune - a unique love song of the Buyi people.
