The Origin of Maotai Liquor

The origin of Moutai should start from the history of sour wine in Chishui River area. Chishui River originated in Zhenxiong, Yunnan, and was named after the purple soil along the coast and the red rain flowing into the river. Chishui River, "gathering the spirit spring, gathering the beautiful water and flowing eastward", is the earliest recorded area for brewing fine wine in the history of the Chinese nation.

According to historical records, in BC 130, Liu Che, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, drank Goujian, a famous wine produced by Yelang (now northern Guizhou), and could not help praising it as "sweet".

Later, there was a history that Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty sent Tang Meng, a general, to explore the road in Guizhou, specifically to bypass the Renhuai where Maotai was located. Among all the fine wines produced by Maotai, the best is Maotai, which was named as a place name by later generations. Therefore, among the numerous traditional liquor brands in China today, Moutai is one of the famous wines with the longest history and the earliest quality.
