The planet with the most moons is
When it comes to moons, we have to mention the Moon, which has been with our planet for billions of years. Because it is always alone in the night sky, our ancient mythology compares it to the "Palace of the Cold", where the lonely Chang'e lives. Whether it's a full moon or a full moon, the ancient poets who were alone and wandering around always liked to use the moon to send their thoughts and homesickness.
But if there were poets on Jupiter, they probably wouldn't have used the moon to express their homesickness. Because Jupiter's "moon" is not alone, Jupiter has as many as 79 "moon", that is, 79 satellites, Jupiter's night sky should be very lively and cheerful. With these 79 moons, Jupiter has dominated the top of the "number of moons" list of the solar system for many years. But that's a thing of the past, and on Monday, Jupiter's throne was stolen by Saturn.......
On Monday, the Carnegie Institution for Science announced that scientists had discovered 20 new satellites of Saturn, bringing the number of known satellites of Saturn up to 20, and the number of Saturn's moons has risen to 1,000. Saturn's known number of moons to 82, replacing Jupiter as the planet with the most moons in our solar system, which scientists also call the most satellite-bearing planet in our solar system.
This new discovery provides scientists with more new clues to study the formation and evolution of Saturn and its moons. "Using the world's most advanced telescopes, we're now completing an inventory of small moons around large planets," said Carnegie astronomer Scott Sheppard, who led the discovery team, in a statement, "and they're helping us to determine the formation and evolution of the planets in our solar system."
The 20 newly discovered moons are all about 5 kilometers in diameter, and 17 of them have retrograde orbits, opposite the direction of Saturn's rotation. One of them is also the farthest known Saturn moon from the planet.
Scientists have grouped these discoveries together with the three known groups of Saturn's moons (the categorization is based on the angle of orbit around Saturn). Seventeen of the retrograde ones join the Norse group (these moons are named after characters from Norse mythology), two join the Inuit group (moons named after Inuit mythology), and one joins the Gallic group (moons named after characters from Gallic mythology).
Scientists believe that each of these moons may have come from a larger moon that may have split into smaller objects during one or more celestial impact events. However, the orbital radius of that new Gallic group of moons is simply too large, and it is much farther from Saturn than its other companions, and scientists speculate that it was pulled out by some force. Further research could help determine what kind of collision produced the group system we see today, and what was going on around Saturn at the time.
With 20 more moons at once, scientists are starting to get a headache naming them. Shepherd intends to ask astronomy enthusiasts on the Web for their opinions on naming these newly discovered moons. Just last year, when the Carnegie Institution discovered a bunch of new moons of Jupiter, they held an online contest to name these new moons. Now, they intend to use the same method to solicit names for the newly discovered moons of Saturn.
Shepherd said, "I was so thrilled by the level of public participation in the contest to name Jupiter's moons that we decided to do it again, naming these newly discovered satellites of Saturn. This time, the moons must be named after giants from Norwegian, Gallic or Inuit mythology."
One day our Chinese astronomers will also explore a series of newly discovered objects in space, and then it will be much easier for ours to name them. We have the Classic of Mountains and Seas, the Fengshen Bang, the Journey to the West, and the Three Kingdoms ...... Our "inventory" of names is too ample.
