The so-called "promoting officials", also called "Dian Ning Meng" or "Na Mian" in local Dong dialect, is one of the most solemn folk activities in Zhaoxing Dong Village. According to the staff, the official promotion activity has a history of more than 300 years, and the custom is generally carried out during the Spring Festival "Month Celebration" (group visit) to ensure the good weather and the prosperity and peace of the village in the coming year.

The form of promoting officials is rather strange. "Officials" are generally dressed in festive costumes by Macey Wa, who is 2-5 years old in Dong Village. Basically, they represent the yes-men. They sat in the sedan chair of a horse and were carried around the village by villagers, accompanied by teams with strange makeup. Through the performance of ancient costumes, the past social phenomena and legends of Dong village are exaggerated, which has a strong drama color.

For those of us who are new here, the ceremony of promoting officials is first to look at strangeness and excitement, and then to look at culture and inheritance. However, many people are at a loss. Looking at these marchers in strange clothes, I don't understand the significance of the activity at all. What is the method of "promotion"? After three gunshots, the team of "promoting officials" set out in two ways: along the way were 10 many young men wearing hoods and dark blue clothes. They jumped into the stream in Dongcun, some with fishing nets, some with fishing rods and some with farm tools ... Along the stream, they imitated the scenes of various farming activities in the water. This is to pray for good weather in the coming year.

The other team is a 100 large army. They either set out from the drum tower of Zhaoxing Dongzhai people's group and passed through the drum tower of Yituan, Liyuan, Zhituan and Xintuan. The "official" is dressed up by a man, a woman and two children, and is carried by two people in a simple bamboo sedan chair. Behind the sedan chair, a group of attendants dressed strangely, some dressed in rags, some dressed as soldiers and bandits, and some exaggerated humor. ......

Behind the parade, there was a long line of well-dressed young men, women and old people. On the way, some people blew reeds and some people set off firecrackers. Every time you enter a drum tower, you will set off firecrackers to welcome you and pour tea and water. After drinking tea, the "official" team will give a red envelope as a thank you. On the way, there are also links such as "blocking the road to rob", asking for "buying money for the road", girls blocking sedan chairs to worship songs, and asking for "officials and people" lucky red envelopes, which reproduce the production and life picture of Dong ancient society.

This is a water cruiser. They are holding all kinds of production tools, sometimes knocking on the water, sometimes making strange noises, and sometimes making various actions to interact with onlookers. They were very happy all the way, both for themselves and tourists.

Zhaoxing Dong Village is actually divided into five groups: Benevolence Group, Righteousness Group, Ritual Group, Wisdom Group and Belief Group. Each group has a Drum Tower. Every time the official team passes through a Drum Tower, they will stop to interact with the villagers and tourists in the village, while a group of people walking by the water will jump into the pond on the side and do various actions such as hitting water and touching fish.

The scene was very happy, but the people watching the waterway in the water still sweated for them. You know, the temperature is very low today. Even though we were wearing thick clothes and felt cold and biting, they jumped into the water happily, which was admirable in itself.

In the process of official promotion, there is an interactive link. I saw a man in straw holding a fork and a delicious fish with Chinese sauerkraut. If tourists want to eat, they need to fight with the scarecrow, and if they are not careful, they will be smeared with pepper by the scarecrow. Stepping on a unique pace, the scarecrow in no way back was forced to give up, but the scarecrow just held the pickled fish behind his head with a stick in his hand, so that tourists could take the opportunity to eat the delicious Dong pickled fish. It is said that eating pickled fish will bring good luck.

As for the source of this activity, a venerable old man in the stockade told Yu Fan that the "promotion of officials" was actually to commemorate a hero Wu who killed demons and defended the safety of Dong stockade. He has made great contributions to the people since he was a child. Later, in order to thank Wu for his kindness, the villagers in the stockade carried him around the village every year on the seventh day of the first month to let his people pay homage.

Later, in order to commemorate Wu Zhi and heroes, promotion activities were passed down from generation to generation and became one of the most grand and traditional activities in Dong Village. Now, the children dress up as officials, hoping that they will get ahead and become new heroes in the village. Finally, the old man said that choosing to hold official promotion activities on the occasion of Dong festivals can also be used as a way to contact clan relatives and enhance village friendship, so that foreign tourists can learn more about Dong traditional culture, which can be described as killing two birds with one stone.
