Local customs 12 year old lantern bearer

The local 12-year-old custom of sending lanterns is a traditional lantern festival in Guanzhong.

Twelve-year-old Lantern Festival is an important part of the Spring Festival custom in Guanzhong area.

When a child reaches the age of 12, a Lantern Festival ceremony will be held after the Spring Festival and before the 15th day of the first month. This is the biggest etiquette for children after the full moon, which indicates that children have ended their childhood and are gradually moving towards adulthood.

Children in Guanzhong area will be given a lantern by their grandmother before the 15th day of the first month every year from birth. This task is usually done by uncles until the child is twelve years old.

When the child is twelve years old, according to the custom, before the fifteenth day of the first month, the uncle of the child should choose two days to send lights, that is, "all lights".

On this day, children's homes will hold a grand lantern-walking ceremony to entertain relatives and friends, so there is no need to send lanterns from now on.
