Why do northerners eat jiaozi and southerners eat glutinous rice balls during Chinese New Year?
Zizi is a folk food with a long history and is deeply loved by people. There is a folk saying "delicious but not as good as jiaozi". The custom of eating jiaozi during the Spring Festival was quite popular in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Jiaozi usually wraps it up before 0/2 o'clock on New Year's Eve/KLOC, and eats it at midnight. At this time, it is the beginning of the first day of the first lunar month. Eating jiaozi means "making friends when I was young", which is homophonic with jiaozi, meaning "happy reunion" and "good luck".
Tangyuan symbolizes family reunion, and eating it means family happiness and all the best in the New Year. Tangyuan is different in different places. For example, lard dumplings are very popular in Ningbo, Cantonese people like to eat four kinds of dumplings, and Shanghainese will make dumplings with sand, wine and yuhua. Xingyi chicken soup dumpling is a feature of Guizhou.
