Cultural Traditions of Nanjing Normal University

The motto of the university is "Zheng De, Hou Sheng, Dugu Xue, Min Xing"

The calligrapher Yu Tianchi wrote the motto of the university. The motto was finalized through an extensive call for submissions during the centennial celebration of Nanjing Normal University.

Zhengde is explained as: uprightness, virtue. Among the various characters of a person or an enterprise, virtue is the first and the most indispensable. Virtue occupies a chiefly important position in a person or a business. Good character is not only the conscience of society, but also the driving force of the nation, for the world is ruled by virtue.

The Zuo Zhuan explains "thick life" as follows: "Thin the levy and strong, light the tax, do not take away the agricultural time, make the people's livelihood, the plan is thick, food and clothing are abundant". The meaning of Hou Sheng is that the purpose of life is not only to live for oneself, but also to use one's own intelligence and ability to help others and society, which not only benefits others, but also makes one's own life fuller.

The meaning of "Duk" is to be generous, honest and faithful. Therefore, the ancients generally associated the word "Duk" with being a person, such as "Duk Zhi", "Duk Xin", "Duk Xing "and so on. To be a human being, one must have character, and to be a scholar must also have character, which is "Duxue", the meaning of which is to be honest and serious about learning.

Confucius's Analects of Confucius had many occurrences of the words "keenness" and "behavior". For example: "A gentleman is careful with his words but sensitive with his actions," "Be sensitive with your words but careful with your words," "Do what you say before you do what you say". "A gentleman is ashamed of his words but not his actions." "Min" means quickness, and "line" is the same as what we call "practice" today. The so-called "Minxing" means to be bold in practice, quick, seize opportunities, and be good at seizing opportunities. The Essence of Tradition "Rigor and Simplicity"-Academic Character
