Why is it called pancake fruit?
Pancake dumplings are a Tianjin snack.
It is composed of mung bean flour pancakes, eggs, and fried dough sticks or thin crispy "禃禦儿", served with flour sauce, minced green onions, and chili sauce (optional) as condiments. It has a salty taste and is now the raw material for pancakes.
It is no longer limited to pancakes made from mung bean noodles, but there are also soybean noodles, black bean noodles and many other options.
However, Tianjin people still adhere to the traditional way of eating. The only ingredients used in authentic pancakes are mung bean noodles, fried dough sticks, chopped green onion, sesame seeds and other condiments.
In many provinces other than Tianjin, pancakes are filled with ham, sausages, even shredded tofu, meat floss and other ingredients. Although the pancakes are called pancake fruit by merchants, they are in name only and are far from authentic.
