What is the flip classroom teaching mode of college English?

Flip classroom is a teaching mode with complementary advantages of traditional teaching and network teaching, and it is an important research direction of current teaching reform in colleges and universities.

College English, as a basic compulsory course in Chinese universities, has a wide audience. How to build college English into an excellent course that college students really like and benefit for life, so as to better meet the requirements of national economic and social development for personnel training, is an important goal to further deepen college English curriculum reform (Wang Shouren, 20 13). With the rapid development of network technology, the construction and research of massive open online courses (large-scale open online courses) has become a hot spot in online education at home and abroad in recent years. Coursera, Udacity, ed X and other large-scale open online course platforms have risen rapidly, and top universities at home and abroad have launched their own large-scale open online courses. With its high-quality teaching resources, large-scale open online courses have brought a revolutionary new educational paradigm in the digital information age and attracted the attention of higher education reformers. As an important basic subject in higher education, college foreign language teaching is an important subject to be solved urgently in large-scale open online courses (Hu Jiehui, 20 14).

The concept of flip classroom was first put forward by two teachers at Woodland Park High School in Colorado, USA. Its basic idea is to reverse the traditional learning process, so that learners can complete their autonomous learning of knowledge points and concepts after class, and the classroom becomes a place for interaction between teachers and students, which is mainly used for answering questions and reporting discussions, thus achieving better teaching results. Flipping the classroom has changed the roles of teachers and students, and changed teachers from traditional knowledge givers to promoters and instructors of students' learning. Students have changed from the traditional passive recipients of knowledge to the main body of learning and become the center of the learning process.

This way of learning gives students great freedom to learn, but it can also be well supervised and make up for the shortcomings of traditional teaching. In recent years, the "flip classroom" has become the focus of education at home and abroad, which is causing profound changes in the educational model, and many scholars and foreign language education experts have carried out research. The basic process of learning includes two stages, namely, knowledge imparting and knowledge internalization. The basic idea of flipping the classroom is to reverse the traditional learning process, complete knowledge transfer before class and complete knowledge internalization in class. Learners complete autonomous learning of knowledge points based on video and other educational resources before class, and the classroom interacts with teachers and students to answer questions and discuss, thus achieving better teaching results. Flipping the classroom teaching mode subverts the classroom teaching process and the teacher-centered concept, which conforms to the design ideas of constructivism and system theory. The flip classroom teaching mode is widely welcomed by students, which establishes the active position of learners, provides personalized learning environment and diversified learning methods, and effectively promotes the improvement of students' communicative competence. This model has played a positive role in improving learners' comprehensive English application ability and learning effect, avoiding teachers' repetitive work and promoting the implementation of innovative teaching.

It is found that the development of flip classroom teaching greatly improves students' learning interest and initiative, and at the same time greatly reduces teachers' teaching time, making students truly become the main body of teaching activities. After several rounds of teaching practice in University of British Columbia, Fudan University and Shanghai Jiaotong University, it is found that more and more flip classes have achieved good teaching results, students' evaluation has been improved, and students' grades have been significantly improved compared with traditional classes.
