What is the most recognized Chinese film genre by audiences around the world?
Ng Sze-yuen, chairman of the jury of the 4th Jackie Chan International Action Movie Week and a famous Hong Kong filmmaker, said, "Kung fu movies are China's calling card. If our Chinese action movies can not only show action fights, but also put Chinese cultural heritage and martial virtues inside the movies, it will play a great role in the promotion of Chinese culture."
Kung fu action movies are a unique landscape in Chinese movie culture. "The genre of Chinese movies that is most recognized by audiences around the world is still kung fu action movies, and this characteristic is even more obvious in international dissemination, with eight of the 10 highest-grossing Chinese movies in the North American film market being kung fu action movies." Yin Hong, a professor at Tsinghua University and vice chairman of the Chinese Association of Literary and Art Critics, said.
However, if kung fu movies want to be enjoyed by more overseas audiences, they have to be based on Chinese culture and seize the roots of Chinese culture so as to incorporate Chinese cultural elements into kung fu movies. Leng said: "To say cultural heritage, kung fu movie is our root. Kungfu movies contain many values in punishing evil and promoting justice, including the ancient Chinese values of 'benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom and trust, loyalty, filial piety, honesty, shame and courage, warmth, goodness, respect, thrift and obedience', which can be seen in many kungfu movies. We should do a better job of incorporating concepts from traditional Chinese culture into kung fu movies so that the world can feel the unique charm of Chinese culture."
Chinese kung fu is intrinsically linked to both Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism cultures, said Gao Xiaoli, "Kung fu movies have a strong genetic advantage, and at the same time, they are blended with Chinese oriental Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhist thought, reflecting the unity of heaven and man and the Taoism of nature in the oriental philosophy, which is naturally appealing to the world's audience. For example, we are familiar with "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", its success is not the success of kung fu, but the power of the oriental philosophical thought system behind kung fu movies for betrayal, forgiveness and self-sacrifice infected the Oscar jury and touched the audience as well. I think this is also the direction of future kung fu movie development."
Kung fu movies are not only for China, but also for the world. Zhong Dafeng, a professor at the Beijing Film Academy, said, "Kung fu can go global and be recognized by the world, winning over Western audiences in a unique way with action films because the cultural connotations contained in martial arts do not only belong to traditional China, but also to the modern world, which still needs a variety of cultural spirits such as self-improvement and self-sufficiency, and the love of people, the world, nature and so on.
