What is a ribbon fax machine and what are its advantages?

Ribbon fax machine: it uses carbon tape with black coating, which can be transferred to printing paper after heating. In ordinary paper fax machines, this machine is cheaper than inkjet and laser fax machines, but the handwriting is not very good.
