Phonetic method

Phonetic method is a phonetic method of Chinese characters, also known as Pinyin.

It is a method of spelling Chinese syllables with Latin letters, which is convenient for people to learn and use Chinese. Phonetic notation first appeared in Ming Dynasty, but it was widely used in Qing Dynasty. The phonetic notation method of modern Chinese is determined in the Chinese Pinyin Scheme published by People's Republic of China (PRC) and the State Council 1958, which is a common phonetic notation method in Chinese mainland, Taiwan Province and Singapore.

The basic principle of phonetic notation is to express the pronunciation of Chinese characters with Latin letters and symbols according to the syllables of Chinese characters. Phonetic notation marks the pronunciation of Chinese characters with three elements: initial consonant, vowel and tone. Initial consonants represent consonants of Chinese characters, vowels represent vowels of Chinese characters, and tones represent tones of Chinese characters.
