Carnival in Basel, Switzerland?
Basel Carnival is the largest carnival in Switzerland. Although its scale cannot be compared with the world-famous carnival in Rio de Janeiro, it will definitely surprise those who think the Swiss are conservative. Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is usually held in midsummer, while in Switzerland, people's clothes are warmer. During the carnival, participants dress up exaggeratedly and enjoy themselves, which is crazy. Masks and costumes can help people find a new self. Carnival teams play music and walk the streets.
The prelude of the Basel Carnival is on the first Monday after the beginning of Lent. On the eve of the festival, people waited all night in the square in the city center. When the bell rang at 4 o'clock in the morning, the city lights went out. In an instant, candlelight flashed, drums blared, and traditional and ancient overtures sounded in countless piccolo. The parade has begun. The parade was led by the leader across the street, followed by the drum team and the costume team.
People marched rhythmically with the drums. Some teams carry huge paper lanterns with poems or cartoons satirizing current events written on them. Women and children throw confetti into the crowd from time to time. The parade car disguised as all kinds of weirdos threw candy and souvenirs at the crowd from the car.
On Monday and Wednesday afternoons, all registered groups marched along the Rhine along a specific route, distributed leaflets to people, and highlighted the festival themes selected in the months before the carnival in the drawing of costumes, masks and lights. Tuesday afternoon belongs to a children's group, which continues the tradition of carnival. The highlight of the carnival is the lantern show in the square. More than 200 lanterns will impress you deeply. Tuesday night belongs to a group band. They gave a special performance in the city center with simple instruments made by themselves.
On Monday and Wednesday nights, people talk about and comment on the events that happened in various bars in the past year, and make them into songs to sing. On Tuesday night, masked musicians will be the main characters, and their impromptu noise concerts will fly to every corner of the city. They will walk through the narrow hutongs with the rhythm of flutes and drums, and of course, the audience will walk through them with great interest. The festival will last until 4 am on Thursday.
In Switzerland, every city has its own carnival at different times, and festival activities often mix pagan spring celebrations, Christian ceremonies and non-religious folk traditions. People in Basel attach great importance to this festival in their city and are proud of it. They think that everyone is the master of the earth these days, and "everyone is king". During the carnival, the whole city will stop working and have fun.
