Beihai old street basic introduction
Beihai Old Street generally refers to Zhongshan Road and Zhuhai Road, the old street was formed around 1927, but its origin goes back to the mid-19th century. Since then, a number of Western buildings have been built in Beihai, and after more than half a century of cultural fusion, the old street we see today was eventually formed. These buildings are not a simple replica of Western architecture, from the deep cultural roots, it flows in the body of the Chinese nation's brilliant civilization of blood, is a beautiful crystallization of the collision of Eastern and Western culture.
Most of the buildings in the old street are two to three-story, mainly by the British, French, German and other countries in the late 19th century in Beihai to build the consulate and other Western rolled-column building influence. The top of the windows on both sides of the street wall are mostly rolled arches, the outer edge of the rolled arches and the top of the window columns are carved lines, smooth lines, exquisite craftsmanship. Street wall decorations and reliefs of different styles, forming the north and south of the two groups of aerial sculpture gallery. These buildings adjacent to the street part of the building, both sides of the road to the extension, but also pavement to the outside of the extension, people walking under the riding floor, both wind and rain, but also to avoid the scorching sun; riding square columns heavy and thick, quite the style of ancient Roman architecture. The most wonderful part of the building is the flower wall, the lower part of the rectangular composition, from the Chinese architecture of the plaque, which can not be found in Western architecture. The plaque, which is supposed to be a calligraphy of an attic or something like that, has evolved into a relief of a branch of plum blossom. The left and right sides of the plaque are also inscribed with couplets, full of flavor. And it is the most primitive source of the Chinese nation of the Yanhuang era within the tribe of totem worship, Yan and Huang two tribes worship the dragon and phoenix, respectively, in the building on the roof of the highest place in the center of the dragon or phoenix placed in the mascot. This mascot is like a main thread that runs through the thousands of years of Chinese civilization. When it appeared on the roof of the Beihai Riding House, it evolved even more colorful.
The essence of the Tianmu, which is found on many of the upper floors, lies in the empty space and the garden. In Chinese culture, the concept of emptiness has a very deep cultural connotation. The so-called wuji gives birth to taiji, taiji gives birth to two yi, two yi gives birth to four elephants, and four elephants give birth to eight trigrams. From an empty space comes a glorious oriental culture. And this circle, it contains more heaven and earth and harmony, the unity of mankind, unity, unity, unity, the world and other profound cultural and philosophical concepts. The southern coast of the Riding House, initially divided into the Min School and the Guangdong School. Due to the influence of the local traditional wood carving techniques, the Min School's mounted buildings are piled up with relief patterns on the fa?ade of the buildings. The Cantonese school of mounted buildings is centered in Guangzhou, and due to its long history, the Lingnan style is the main theme, along with the Manchurian and European styles. Beihai has been under the jurisdiction of Guangdong for a long time, so the Beihai Cavalcade is a branch of the Cantonese Cavalcade. However, compared with Fujian and Guangdong, the Beihai Riding Mansions do not have overly complicated carvings, but are more concise, with exquisite lines, prominent climaxes, and overall harmony. The maturity of its artistic treatment is a wonder.
Beihai's Western architectural complex, which corresponds to the historical events of the two treaties, namely, the Treaty of Tianjin in 1858 and the Treaty of Yantai in 1876, as well as the semi-colonial historical period that lasted for more than half a century, so the Beihai Old Street is again a witness to history.
Before 1927, Zhuhai Road used to be the busiest commercial area in Beihai, with stores lined up, the stores in the middle section mainly dealt with silks and satins from Suzhou and Hangzhou, the stores in the east section mainly dealt with dried seafoods, such as squids, sandworms, shrimps, and dried fishes, and in the west section close to the port of Waisa, all the stores all dealt with fishermen's goods such as cables, fishnets, fishhooks, fishing lamps, wind canvasses, and boat nails. With the passage of time, the old street of Beihai has gradually lost its former prosperity, except for a few stores operating fishing gear, other stores have almost become residential, and the street buildings are aging, but because of the preservation of Zhuhai Road buildings are still intact, and is regarded as a modern architectural almanac by historians and architects.
Famous writer Shu Yi (son of Lao She) believes that Zhuhai Road is exactly the same as Singapore's national treasure old street, and that this old street with great development value should be protected. British architectural expert Mr. Richard Bray believes that the historical and cultural value of Zhuhai Road has significance not only to Beihai, but also to South China, all of China, and the whole world.
Walking along the old street, you will feel a very different cultural atmosphere, where the street, the buildings, the people, and the dried salted fish drying by the door of every house, you can't help but forget that you are in the city. Here there is no traffic scene, the old people shaking a big fan in the door by the cool, or Qiqi gathered around chatting or playing mahjong, their eyes through the peace and quiet, as if the old street everything is still the same as when they were children, nothing has changed.
