Born on May 14, 1961, in the south London suburb of Dulwich, he is of Jewish descent and was originally named Timothy Simon Smith. After World War II his father changed his name to Roth in order to support the survivors of the Holocaust and to make it easier for him to travel to and from countries hostile to Britain and the U.S.

He comes from a modest middle-class family and has a long history of working in the United States.

He came from a modest middle-class family; his father was a journalist, a member of the British **** Party, who settled in the Libyan desert in his later years, so much so that TR now has a picture of his father with Colonel Gaddafi; his mother was a left-leaning liberal, a landscape painter, and a schoolteacher to supplement her income. Later, TR was proud to say that his parents were enlightened and "facilitated" him.

But his childhood was not a happy one, quite the opposite: he was sexually abused, and his parents' divorce added salt to the wound. These left permanent scars on his mind, which in turn completely ruined his education. By the end of elementary school, he had failed to join the rest of the Dulwich borough and returned all his papers untouched.

He went to a notoriously bad school, where he stayed for six years. During that time he became obsessed with punk, headed the school's anti-racism club, did drugs, and, at 15, was taken to jail for a night after a confrontation between fellow marchers and the police.

At 16, he had his first experience on stage: a school rehearsal for the musical Dracula, in which he played the lead role. It was a horrible experience, and because of his extreme nervousness, he not only got cold feet but also wet his pants.

He began to choose a career. His family's influence and his own experiences had always given him an almost fanatical interest in social change. At the age of 11 or 2, he aspired to be a missionary, but he soon came to believe in no God, just like his father. Although his first performance was a failure, it captivated him. Acting is a political thing", he said - perhaps for him, his career was not primarily a means of self-catharsis and solace, but a way of transforming society. After 18 months at university studying sculpture, he made "the best decision of my life": to quit school and become an actor.

Not a British actor in the traditional sense of the word, with no professional training, he began his career in the small theater that came with the bar. When he wasn't rehearsing, he spent the first few years working as a salesman to make ends meet.

One night on his way home from a bike ride, he was pumping up his bike when he was noticed: he had shaved his head for a rehearsal of Cassio in Othello, and was approached by someone who asked if he wanted to play a skinhead.

The TV movie was Alan Clarke's Made in Britain. TR had always respected Clarke's work, especially Scum, and he mentioned Ray Winstone as one of his motivations for becoming an actor. After talking to him, Clarke was pleased with him and decided that he was the right man for the lead role of a man who spreads violence and pain around. Made in Britain depicts the lives of London's underclass during the early years of Margaret Thatcher's administration. Its sober realism and Alan Clarke's advocacy of integrity would later influence TR. And after the film, Clarke recommended him to Mike Leigh, who was preparing to make MeanTime, a TV movie about London's underclass: all of which pointed to his becoming a true class actor.

His role in MeanTime, which was a little stunted, centered on him and his girlfriend, brother, and best friend (played by Gary Oldman), and, judging from the available video material, was perhaps his most affecting. He went on to star in his first big-screen movie, The Hit, a rookie hit man just starting out.

By '85, things were going well. The Hit earned him a slew of "Most Promising Newcomer" awards, including a BAFTA; that year, he and his girlfriend had a son, and he saw the little thing born, named him Jack Earnest, and tattooed J.E.R. and his birthday on his right arm.

Critics referred to him at the time, placing him alongside Daniel Day-Lewis, Gary Oldman, the so-called stalwarts of the Brit-Pack roster. But they took different paths. While the others took decent roles, won awards regularly, he had nothing. He stubbornly resisted what he considered to be a shit commercial movie and stuck to the independent route. But during the recession, when the British film industry was almost dead, there wasn't much he wanted to make. Besides, the competition in the UK was already fierce. (He once described it as "it's like 'Fuck you! I want it!' ")

For four years, he had no work, no friends, and lived in abject poverty.

In '88, there was only work for him in January. To make ends meet, he went to work at a supermarket, stocking shelves with new arrivals, and another job selling to people on the phone, which he did both of. He and Jack's mother broke up that year. Bitterness set in, and he spent his days either drinking or sleeping. Then, a mad desire for work drove him to Holland, France, Czechoslovakia, Australia, and even Africa . . . Finally, while sleeping in the sewers of Amsterdam, he was discovered by Peter Greenaway, who brought him back to England to play Theif's henchman in The Cook, The thief, His wife & Her Lover.

Then came the first movie to bring him international fame, Vincent & Theo with Robert Altman, reflecting Van Gogh's later years. He knew Van Gogh well, for he was not only his idol, but his father's as well. At that moment, however, his father died. When his body was cremated, he was accompanied only by a photo sent by his son from the Van Gogh production and a bouquet of sunflowers. The Labor Party was present at his father's funeral, but not TR, who was in Ethiopia at the time. That night, he cried for his father, and probably for himself, in the direction of England.

:" . . . but when I was in my twenties, I realized how wonderful he was . . . The male figure in my life . . . for good or for bad." His father was the most influential person in his life. Ten years later, in an interview in Paris, he was still in tears at the mention of his father : " I wanted to be there, but I was in the middle of hell . . . . you don't want to know . . . my father never believed in God, so I felt I could cry for him over there in Ethiopia."

His name is once again associated with Gary Oldman. The black comedy, Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead, won rapturous praise. But his prospects in Britain remain bleak. And his problems with the Conservative government became irreconcilable: at an awards ceremony, he publicly called Margaret Thatcher a cunt. This was so outrageous that he was thrown out of the country.
