Artistic resume

Try your hand first.

As early as at Zhongshan North Primary School in Nanning, when studying in Nanning No.2 Middle School, Lei Dezu was the main force of wall newspaper in the school. At that time, the headlines of the school newspaper, such as the red scarf, the praise of the new wind, the good man and the hymn of the Great Leap Forward, were all painted by Lei Dezu. There are mastheads painted with colored chalk, posters painted with gouache pigments, comic books and cartoons painted with ink lines. Since then, Lei Dezu's interest in painting has been "put into use" since childhood.

From 65438 to 0959, accompanied by his grandfather, Lei Dezu entered Guangxi Art College and was admitted to the High School Attached to Guangxi Art College with excellent results, from which his artistic development began. After three years of hard study and life in the affiliated middle school, 1962, Lei Dezu was admitted to the undergraduate printmaking major with excellent results. Lei Dezu felt like a duck to water after stepping into the door of the Art Institute. Under the guidance of his teacher, he diligently studied basic skills such as sketching, sketching, composition and color.

When studying in the attached middle school, Lei Dezu set high requirements and standards for himself: "We should catch up with the undergraduate level within one year and reach the national level within three years". Lei Dezu, who was only 16 years old at that time, was regarded as a "white college student" and almost lost his studies in order to put forward such a slogan.

In order to achieve his goal, Lei Dezu often does not rest at noon and uses it for painting. In the evening, he also went to the college to paint. After turning off the lights and sleeping, he was still lying in bed pecking and grinding how to express this muscle. After seven years of strict basic training and self-study, Lei Dezu laid a solid foundation for himself on the road of artistic creation. Because of his solid basic skills such as sketching, sketching, composition and color, he felt very comfortable when he picked up a pen to create.

Comic book career

1964, when he entered the second year of undergraduate course, he drew his first cartoon debut "Wheel Flying" for Tianjin Fine Arts Publishing House. This is the first set of cartoons in Lei Dezu's life, all of which were drawn by traditional sketching techniques. The painter's application of traditional techniques and layout in this set of cartoons is very mature, which shows that he has a solid foundation in traditional techniques. Then he drew a cartoon "The Story of Fishing Nets". Because the unhealthy trend against "white experts" was very serious at that time, I was worried that I would be labeled as "white experts" again. Therefore, when Lei Dezu painted these two sets of cartoons, he hid in his parents' home or his brother's dormitory during holidays and spare time to complete the manuscript, and he dared not publicize the works in the college after they were published.

Since then, Lei Dezu has formed an indissoluble bond with comic creation. The success of writing after class does not affect his professional study. 1966 graduated with honors from the printmaking department of Guangxi Arts University, and his graduation work "Yankee Go Home! (Printed matter) was published by Art magazine and People's Daily. When Lei Dezu graduated, he faced the "unprecedented Cultural Revolution". Fortunately, his study is over, his artistic wings are full, and no amount of wind and waves can blow it down and swallow it. From 65438 to 0969, Lei Dezu was assigned to the company to exercise for two years. The hard life and military training in the company have accumulated a lot of sketches and life materials for his future creation of military themes. He took part in the national art exhibition on the drawing No.035 of 1973, and made his mark in the cartoon industry, which was well received. Later, it was selected to go abroad for exhibition. At that time, Guangxi TV station broadcasted a whole set of cartoons one by one on TV station for the first time, which caused great repercussions in the art world and society. The successful creation of No.035 is the first milestone of Lei Dezu's successful creation of comic books by using black, white and line techniques. Yang Zhiguang, a professor at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, pointed out in an article that Lei Dezu's "Figure 035" is a typical example of the combination of line and surface in comic and illustration art. Thanks to the recognition and encouragement of the society and the art world, Lei Dezu is more determined to take the artistic road of combining black, white and line. Later, this technology was basically used in comic books and a large number of illustrations, such as Escape from Sky Reef, Two Wanderers, Faithful Soul in the Moon Sea, and This is How Steel is Made.

"south thunder and north swallow"

There are two sayings in the comic book circle: "South Gu Bei Liu" and "South Thunder Liu Beiyan", that is, the representative figures in the comic book circle were from Shanghai and Beijing in the 1950s and 1960s, and from Guangxi and Beijing in the 1970s and 1980s.

Composers are good at composing with strong and weak notes and a strong sense of rhythm. Excellent cartoonist and illustrator, good at organizing pictures with black, white, line and line rhythm. There are black blocks, there are spaces and there are lines. This rhythm, which is produced by mutual restriction and mutual foil, forms the rhythm of painting and shows charm. The ever-changing artistic effect of flowers is deeply hidden in the rhythm of expressing the relationship between black, white and line in the modeling structure.

Lei Dezu explored nearly 30 spring and autumn periods in the art world of black, white and line, and published nearly 100 comic books, most of which were medium-length and long, with a total of more than 10,000. There are thousands of illustrations, which shows that the number of comic books and illustrations created by Lei Dezu is amazing. These works are all obtained by the painter in the exploration of the artistic world of black, white and line. He often tells others that my style is still changing and wants to explore more and better expressions. It can be seen that he is an enterprising painter who is not satisfied with the present situation.

Military painter

Two years of company life and military training provided rich direct life materials for Lei Dezu's love of revolutionary war themes in the future. His later comic strips A Leaf in the South of the Yangtze River, Faithful Soul in Guangdong Sea, Chen Yi Coming out of the Mountain, Defending Yan 'an, Taking Medicine from the Tiger's Mouth, and even 1984 The Garland under the Mountain, which won the bronze medal in the 6th National Art Exhibition, are all works reflecting the fighting life of the army. In these works, painters have successfully shaped military figures and war environments with different personalities through the materials they have experienced in military life, which has won unanimous praise from the majority of art peers and readers. Before the creation of "Garland under the Mountain", the counterattack against Vietnam had just begun. At that time, bullets rained on the front line, and Vietnamese spies often went deep into hand-to-hand combat with us. Lei Dezu still took the initiative to ask the leaders of the Federation of Literary and Art Circles to experience life in the first batch, collected a lot of creative materials and brought back many thrilling and vivid stories of personal experience. Therefore, his cartoon "Garland under the Mountain" was the only book of its kind published by more than ten domestic publishing houses at that time, and won the medal of the sixth national art exhibition in one fell swoop. This is the crystallization of his personal experience of frontline life, the crystallization of his collection of materials, and his passionate expression and praise of contemporary great patriotic soldiers with his pen.

Artistic feature

Foreign theme

Lei Dezu is good at drawing comic books with foreign themes. Most of his cartoons published in his life are cartoons with foreign themes, such as Spartacus, Napoleon, The Misty Garden Case, The Broken-hearted Boxing Champion, Three Strangers, The Old Man and the Sea, Treasure Island, The Adventures of the Little Captain, etc. From 1979 to 1982, Lei Dezu spent three years creating four sets of Spartacus for Guangxi People's Publishing House, which reflected the theme of the slave uprising in ancient Rome in Europe, and won the second prize of the Second National Comic Award. This work is a new artistic milestone of Lei Dezu after 035. In this set of comic books with the theme of ancient Rome, the painter not only gave full play to his solid basic skills of human body structure modeling and vivid character dynamics, but also pushed the original technique of combining face and line in Figure 035 to the artistic technique of taking black and white blocks as the main body and sketching a little. As a result, the whole painting highlights the "western" flavor of foreign paintings. The success of Spartacus marks the sublimation of Lei Dezu's black, white and line art to a new artistic peak. In order to create this set of more than 700 foreign cartoons, Lei Dezu studied the original works repeatedly with a serious attitude, looked through the vast historical materials and pictures, and watched the Roman War movies and Roman sculptures many times, making the characters, environment, props and buildings in this set of cartoons lifelike, very realistic, as if the author had really been to ancient Rome.

After the publication of Lei Dezu's cartoon Spartacus, it was well received by artists and readers. Guangxi People's Publishing House reprinted it three times, with a cumulative print run of more than two million copies. It turns out that several provincial publishing houses in China have plans to publish this set of cartoons. When they learned that Lei Dezu had set out to create this set of books for Guangxi People's Publishing House, they felt that they could not find a more suitable good author and gave up the topic voluntarily. As a result, Lei Dezu's "Spartacus" comic has become the only one-page book set in China, and it is also one of the most sought-after comic collections at present.

Lei Dezu always thinks that the material of artistic creation comes from two aspects, one is direct and the other is indirect. And these two aspects can't attach importance to this and despise that, or want this and don't want that. Lei Dezu's artistic life also follows this aim to create his cartoons and illustrations.

Tool media

When Lei Dezu draws cartoons and illustrations, he is very good at using pen, ink and paper. He often uses pens and brushes, but all the pens he uses are processed and transformed by himself. For example, after the curved mouth is polished, an olive-shaped groove is dug, and the amount of ink in the pen is increased, so that the painting is very smooth and comfortable. Many lines with different thicknesses can be drawn, and the levels of black, white and lines in the picture have increased, forming a new style of cartoon illustration lines.

In terms of using brushes, he also attaches great importance to Jiao Mo's paintings, and flexibly uses the center, side and intersection of brushes to produce different virtual and real effects. He also pays great attention to the difference between a wrinkle and a double-stroke wrinkle. He is used to a wrinkle, because although a wrinkle is difficult to master, it can make people feel that the picture has a sense of movement and a tendency to stimulate, and the formation of the same stroke is relatively more vivid and interesting than the formation of double strokes.

In terms of paper, Lei Dezu likes to use rough paper when painting with brush and dry ink, and he likes to use white hard paper to dry. The contrast between black and white in this painting is both weighty and elegant. He also noticed that he was good at painting detective subjects and foreign subjects. Its characteristic is that it is good at expressing the middle scene and the close scene, and the image is very detailed and rich, especially when the composition angle changes greatly, the use of perspective and black blocks can create a deeper and farther feeling.

Lei Dezu thinks that painting tools and materials can complement the technical perfection, but the effect is not enough, and can produce unexpected special effects. Therefore, the research, selection and improvement of materials and tools is also an aspect of the success of black and white line painting.

Lei Dezu is not satisfied with the existing artistic expression techniques. He constantly explores innovative expression techniques, adding new charm and artistic life to his comic book and illustration art, which is also the reason why Lei Dezu's comic book and illustration art can be welcomed and succeeded by many authors and readers.

Illustrations are necessary.

Lei Dezu's illustration art can often add icing on the cake to literary works, and is welcomed by authors and readers. The famous writer Lu's novel Waterfall was published by China Youth Publishing House. The author cited Lei Dezu to illustrate his works. Overseas Chinese in Singapore and compatriots in Hong Kong also asked Lei Dezu to draw pictures for their literary works. Several readers of Sichuan Institute of Physical Education wrote to the editorial department of Guangxi Literature, saying that we liked Lei Dezu's illustrations very much and suggested that every issue of Guangxi Literature should have Lei Dezu's illustrations in the future.

As we all know, it is not easy to draw good illustrations of literary works. It requires the author not only to have certain painting skills, but also to have extensive knowledge and literary accomplishment. In order to make his illustrations and literary works complement each other, Lei Dezu often uses his spare time to read various literary works.

When creating painting illustrations, Lei Dezu often noticed that due to the differences in literary themes and contents, he also made many attempts to explore the form, trying to find a better form that is consistent with the content. Therefore, in the whole literary illustration, the author uses different styles and techniques to find the central content and wonderful plot in the article, so as to get the essence out of the rough, and even the illustration can accurately express the meaning of the text and exert its artistic charm.

In Lei Dezu's illustrations, he is often good at the rigorous black-and-white sketch relationship and accurate character structure, and the illustration pays attention to the relationship between subjectivity and subordination and the effect of virtual reality. In his view, the choice of words and meanings of illustrations is flexible and should not be limited by a certain plot of the article, which will constrain the display of artistic passion. When creating illustrations, we should be mindful of the overall situation, how to play and express the key points, so that the picture has a sense of artistic form and contains profound and rich content and knowledge. The diversification of illustration forms can not only make it break away from the monotonous concept, but also make the picture interesting and consistent with the content of the article. So his illustrations are very unique.

Another feature of Lei Dezu's illustrations is that no matter what form they take, they are inseparable from the realistic style. He believes that realism is a more acceptable form for the public. His images in illustrations are rich, striking and accurate, which makes many writers happy. For example, after the illustrations of Lei Dezu's works Snake Tooth and Destiny's Family were published, the author wrote twice to thank him. And published and reprinted in Hong Kong. Comrades in the editorial department of People's Literature visited the editorial department of Guangxi Literature and Art on 1977, and said with emotion, "The illustrations of Lei Dezu in your publication are the most prominent in the country at present." . Because of its great influence, Lei Dezu's illustrations are reported in newspapers, magazines and pictorial all over the country. After publication, illustrations of Lei Dezu's publications are often cut and collected by professional and amateur authors. Lei Dezu often receives letters from readers suggesting the publication of a special collection of Lei Dezu illustrations.

Lei Dezu made an in-depth study of western European figures in foreign literature illustrations. The westerners he created in his illustrations not only look alike, but also draw their temperament and living habits. Especially in several illustrations of Spartacus, it makes readers feel more authentic. In these illustrations, Lei Dezu can grasp the most exciting plots, tense and tragic scenes, and make readers feel the delicacy, texture and strength in the works. In several illustrations of Wugongdui, the painter took the most fascinating thrilling plot and imminent fierce fighting as the illustration theme, which made readers have to read the novel after seeing these illustrations, which really played an important role in illustration.

Another feature of Lei Dezu's illustrations is that in the process of composition, people can feel rich changes, which are both realistic and romantic. He can master the characteristics of illustration different from other paintings, highlight the image, omit a lot of complicated backgrounds, and the picture layout is just right, which embodies the unique artistic style of the artist's illustration. This not only adds color to literary works, but also makes illustration an art that can be appreciated alone.

Lei Dezu Illustrated Collection published by Anhui People's Publishing House is selected from a large number of illustrated works created by Lei Dezu. There are more than 200 illustrations in this collection of Lei Dezu illustrations. From these 200 representative works, we can find more than 20 different forms of expression, including single-line sketch, lines and black-and-white blocks, rubbing with dry pen, black-and-white blocks, exaggerated line drawing, pure pen line drawing, and the combination of pen lines and dry pen painting.
