Model essay and reference translation of IELTS social composition

Some people think that cities don't need ancient and historic buildings, they should be destroyed and replaced by modern buildings. Do you agree with this statement? The following is my IELTS social composition, for your reference.

IELTS composition 1 Should a city try to preserve its ancient and historic buildings, or should it destroy them and replace them with modern buildings?

Model answer:

Some people think that old historical buildings are unnecessary for cities, and they should be destroyed and replaced by modern buildings. However, others believe that in order to understand and remember our past, historical buildings must be protected. For several reasons I will mention below, I agree with those who want to protect ancient historical buildings.

First of all, by protecting historical buildings, we pass on our history to our future generations. I think our children should know their history, learn from it and respect it. People need to know their traditions and customs, which are priceless and irreplaceable. Our history is our knowledge and strength. In my opinion, we need to protect and restore historic buildings. By destroying them, we show disrespect for our ancestors and their traditions.

Secondly, by protecting historical buildings, a city can attract many tourists. A city can get many benefits by welcoming tourists, including money, which can be used to protect historical buildings and improve roads and facilities.

Besides, many tourists mean many new business opportunities. Another important aspect is that businessmen are willing to build new entertainment centers, hotels, cinemas and shopping centers to make a city more attractive to tourists. Apart from those practical benefits, many people will have a chance to get a job. All these are good for the city's economy.

In a word, I think protecting ancient historical buildings will only bring benefits to a city and all mankind.

Some people prefer to eat in food stalls or restaurants. Others like to prepare and eat food at home.

Which one do you like?

Model answer:

Throughout the ages, mankind has experienced a change from having to look for food everywhere to having to buy food now. Some people like to buy fresh vegetables, meat and fruits and prepare food at home. However, others prefer to skip cooking and go to restaurants. I think these two options have their own advantages and disadvantages. I will give some reasons to support my answer below.

Personally, I don't like fast food. Therefore, my choice is always between the restaurant and my home. First of all, I want to say that cooking is a great tradition. It helps people relax and recall some happy moments when peeling or cutting vegetables. This is a way to eliminate stress and tension. Secondly, sometimes I don't want to eat anything too complicated for dinner. I just want to eat light food, such as salad and a glass of milk. So, one of the reasons why I like eating at home is because I can have what I want at this moment. One advantage of eating at home is that I can sit in front of the TV and watch an interesting program or movie. Finally, having dinner at home can make the family communicate with each other, get closer and share some good and bad moments that happened earlier in the day. Besides, eating at home is a good way to save money.

As for restaurants, I also saw some positive aspects of eating there. First of all, I sometimes feel tired from peeling, cutting, washing and frying. This doesn't mean that I have done a lot. Sometimes I just use the microwave oven and the pretreated food I bought before. I want to eat something more delicious than my refrigerator, something that takes time to prepare at home. So, for me, this is a good reason to go to a restaurant. There, people may meet old friends, or just listen to music, taste some delicious meat and have a good time.

Besides, restaurants are a good place to celebrate something. One doesn't have to prepare food for all the friends who are coming, wash the dishes, clean up all the mess after the party, and so on.

In a word, I don't think it matters where we eat. It is important to be full and nutritious.
