Mei Baojiu's great-grandfather Mei Qiaoling was a famous Peking Opera actor who was listed as one of the "Thirteen Musts of Tongguang" in the19th century, and also played Hua Dan in Tsing Yi. His grandfather Mei Zhufen was also a versatile Peking Opera actor, but unfortunately he died young. His great-uncle, Mei Yutian, is an excellent Peking Opera musician, who has been following Peking Opera master Tan Xinpei for a long time. His father is a world-famous Peking Opera master, Mr. Mei Lanfang. His mother, Fu Zhifang, is a Manchu and the wife of Mr. Mei Lanfang. His elder brother Mei and his second brother Mei Shaowu don't like Peking Opera, while his elder sister Mei sings an old song. He is the youngest child in the family.

Mr. Mei Baojiu was born in Shanghai on 1934, when Mr. Mei Lanfang, as a patriotic artist, had a clear beard and refused to perform. Mr Mei Lanfang sent young Mei Baojiu to Sinian University run by the French Catholic Church to study French, English and theology, and received a westernized education. Up to now, Mr. Mei Baojiu has maintained a high level of foreign languages, and he is quite "foreign" in his oral dialogue with foreign guests. Mr. Mei Lanfang teaches art to his disciples at home, and Mr. Mei Baojiu is deeply influenced by it. Seeing that Mei Baojiu looks like him and has a voice, Mr. Mei Lanfang thinks that he has this talent, so he invited his nephew Wang Youqing to enlighten him, and invited Tao, Zhu Chuanming and Zhu to teach Wushu, Kunqu Opera and Hua Dan respectively.
