What are the "narrative" and "grand narrative" in historiography?

In historiography, the genre is mostly narrative, so there are narratives and grand narratives. My personal understanding is that grand narratives generally draw conclusions first, and then begin to provide clues and evidence. There are various methods, but the narrative is incomplete. Narration, on the other hand, pays more attention to details, the materials are true, and the narrative has no obvious guiding conclusion, which can restore the history itself better.

In fact, these two narratives in history often occur in our lives, and we can know the difference between them with a little understanding. For example, a group of people get together and ask about a girl. A appears, saying that this girl is very open, changing boyfriends every day and sleeping with many people. My brother sent me pictures of her before.

At this time, B also came out and said that it was true. I have been with this girl, but I think she is very nice, sexy and charming, so there are so many men chasing her. Then, C came out and said, I am the Communist Youth League Secretary of her university. I saw her personal information when I received the message. She is 165 and weighs 45 kilograms. Her parents are divorced and she has two younger brothers at school. She lives with her mother and runs a small restaurant in the back street of the school.

Then analyze the narrative techniques of these three people. Both A and B are very instructive. Speaking out, this girl is more outgoing, and she also provides some clues. A is worse. Listen to him, the girl will think she is very bad. And B still has a little conscience, objectively evaluating the beauty and charm of the girl.

When we get to C, we forget what the previous two people said, and we will find that the image of this girl is becoming more and more specific. Her family background and personal information came out. In fact, the narratives of A and B are grand narratives, which are often incomplete and targeted, which may make the truth of the matter deviate. C is a narrative, which is relatively simple and straightforward. It provides a lot of details and is still official information. This is the difference between narrative and grand narrative.

Narrative can restore history more than grand narrative, so I hope everyone will try to avoid grand narrative when recording for a period of time. Telling stories, characters themselves, details and sources of information must be true.
