Why martial arts are now called sets

Sets are a part of Wushu in the form of drills.

Wushu is a traditional sport based on the theoretical foundation of Chinese culture, with the method of technical combat as the basic content, and with sets, fighting and gongfu as the main forms of movement. This is the Chinese Wushu Association's definition of wushu, which means that the routine is a branch of wushu, and wushu has not only routines but also fighting and gongfu.

The reason why we have a misunderstanding of wushu is that is the routine, it is necessary to go back to look at our national situation and culture, in order to better understand the reasons for the high degree of artistry of the Chinese martial arts routines.

The formation of the routine, not only the performance needs of the formation of factors, but also the formation of fitness factors, as well as a special historical period of the government to promote. "In the past, there was a good person Gongsun, a dance sword moving four directions. The spectators were as dismayed as the color of the mountains, and heaven and earth were long lowered." This is the description of Gongsun Daniang's sword dance in the famous poet Du Fu's "Guan Gongsun Daniang's Disciples Dancing Sword and Sword Instrument Line and Preface" in the Tang Dynasty. It can be shown that the form of the routine was developed very early. on May 31, 1955, at the tenth meeting of the plenary session of the State Council, the work report of the State Sports Commission said, "the original martial arts groups in factories, mines, enterprises, schools and institutions should be rectified; if there is no such group, it will not be established for the time being. Resolutely stop the development of rural areas, the original martial arts activities, can be led by the township government, the youth league, do not be used by bad elements to do bad things." This defined the nature of "martial arts" as a tool for "bad elements to do bad things". Soon, all martial arts activities were banned in the countryside, which was the main base of martial arts activities in the countryside. There were no more traces of martial arts in the countryside. After that, the development of wushu has always been based on the routine, not to promote combat sports, the nation's sports colleges and universities of wushu majors are also practicing routines, the National Games wushu competitions are also routines of the competition. There is no fighting sport.

Until 1979, the country's reform and opening up, with a wave of China's martial arts fever re-emerged; China's Central Government Sports Commission in accordance with the modern competitive sports model, the first in the Zhejiang Provincial Sports Commission, the Beijing Institute of Physical Education and Wuhan Institute of Physical Education, wushu confrontation project pilot training. Only after that was the competitive sport of sparring formed.

So for a long time the development of sets gradually became synonymous with wushu.
