Newspapers that emerged in China from 1900 to 1950
It was the first organ newspaper founded by the Xing Zhong Hui (Society for the Promotion of Chinese Culture), and the earliest newspaper in China to publicize the bourgeois revolution. It was founded in Hong Kong on January 5, 1900, with Chen Shaobai as president and chief editor.
The early propaganda focused on: (1) exposing and denouncing the corruption and incompetence of the government and the crimes of treason, and publicizing the anti-Qing and anti-feudalism; (2) publicizing the bourgeois ideology of civil rights, introducing the history of the bourgeois revolutions in Britain and France, praising the democracy*** and and calling on the people to rise up to fight for democracy and freedom; (3) reporting on the revolutionary activities of revolutionaries and the Society of Staying-in-Japan, and publicizing the solidarity with the Boxer Rebellion's anti-imperialism anti-invasion actions; (4) publicizing anti-imperialist salvation, denouncing the crimes of the Eight-Power Allied Forces' invasion of China and the ambitions of Tsarist Russia to invade China, and calling on the people to rise up to save the country; and (5) criticizing the bourgeois royalists.
China Daily was modeled after Japanese newspapers that used short-line typesetting, which was a business innovation to the traditional vertical, long-line version.
China Daily was not only a public opinion propaganda position for the revolutionaries, but also an important base for their activities. This form of organization, which was both an organ of public opinion and a liaison organ, was a bourgeois newspaper, whose most important feature was that it closely combined the running of the newspaper with armed insurrection.
